Personal Profile
. I am an Electrical Engineer with Mechanical Engineering experience, I have extensive practical experience in
engineering and project management, design, project and construction management, commissioning and testing and
maintenance. My experience has been gained from maintenance and projects in Industrial Plants, Coal exporting
terminals, Power Generation, Distribution and Design, Communications systems, Test department of Escom, Sugar
Mill’s, Aluminium smelters and Sawmilling and process plants.
This has included Maximizing Equipment Effectiveness programs, TPM and TQM in the production environment. I
have also gained vast experience with Maintenance Management Systems, SAP and RCM, all versions and the
implementation there of.
I used the latest RACS , BCS and PX system project management tools as developed and used by BHP Billiton
worldwide to manage and audit projects in the Aluminium industry.
Analysing, developing and implementing solutions for production enhancement forms the greater part of my past
industrial experience.
My experience gained, has been in both the local and international markets
Electrical and Control Experience
My electrical and controls experience primarily is in power generation, coal materials handling systems, aluminium
smelters, covering the whole spectrum of the electrical engineering discipline, ranging to UHF radio and microwave
communication systems.
Experience includes commissioning of turbo alternators and synchronisation with Escom grid, Emergency
Generation Plants, UPS’s, switchyard and distribution transformers, 132Kv, 33Kv, 22Kv and 11Kv switch gear
including double ended and ring feeders, power factor correction, both high and low voltage Motor Control Centres
and networks.
PLC’s, AC+DC. VSD drives, Scada systems, High volume measuring systems, soft start drives via networks like
Profi-Bus, Device Net with mechanical, electrical and Instrumentation systems interfaces.
Design and implementation of interlocks for medium voltage switchgear.
Mechanical Experience
My mechanical experience ranges from steam and power generation, Humidification steam and the distribution of
steam, Vapour recompression, Power distribution and conversion, Maintenance and upgrade of Stacker Reclaimers
and high volume conveyor systems, Sampling plants, condition & performance based monitoring and interpretation
to maintenance management systems.

The JV supplied specialized concrete to 5 contractors and implemented specific designed concrete plinths
and foundations for conveyors and machine structures for phase 1 of a 12Million tone coal processing and
storage plant.
Duties:
• Manage the whole site with 3 civil engineers, 2 Land surveyors, 6 foreman, artisan workforce of
25 staff and labour of 80 people, implemented designs.
• Deliver concrete to specification and project schedule.
• Supply, install and deliver materials, sand, stone, cement, cut and bend steel for structures,
interface with logistic supply dept in Maputo for these materials.
• Manage the health and safety aspect of the contract and the contractual agreements ( FIDIC

timber to sawmills.
Duties:
Responsible for the complete engineering maintenance and projects functions for 3 sawmills, one plywood mill,
transport workshops, company properties, buildings, infrastructure, roads, water & sewage plants, roads, electrical
power and reticulation.
Responsible person under the HSE act for the 4 sawmill plants and Plywood factory:
Equipment included: wood chip fueled Steam boilers, steam reticulation systems, compressors, HV reticulation,
conveyors, chemical process plants, large mechanical saws, dust suppression handling systems, belt & chain
conveyor systems, Plant automation, PLC & Scada systems. Steam operated wood kiln dryer systems and control
systems.
Achievements:
• Introduced a planned maintenance system based on ‘equipment effectiveness measurement systems”

Reasons for leaving:
The wood sawmilling industry were experiencing grave financial problems due to no expenditure on maintenance
and capital improvements for 15 years.
The initial drawcard to be employed by Merensky was the promise to be Project Manager for a R1.2 billion super
sawmill project in Kokstad, next to the new plywood mill.
This project never materialized.
However due to mis- reading the international market, Kokstad plywood mill was closed down and assets sold to
York Timbers.
Labour unrest closed down Weza sawmill for 3 months
A call to rescue a civil engineering project in Mozambique prompted resignation.

RICHARDSBAY COAL TERMINAL. ENGINEERING MANAGER MAINTENANCE & ENGINEERING MANAGER
PROJECTS: (16 YEARS SERVICE)
Duties:
• Responsible for all aspects of electrical, electronic and mechanical maintenance and refurbishment for 5
Stacker Reclaimers, 3 Stackers and one Reclaimer, Ten 11Kv Substations, 3.3Kv, 550v and 380v supply
and interconnected electrical power distribution systems, 25Kv Railway overhead track and Railway track
signalling maintenance.
• 10 Diesel electric locomotives to perform shunting and hauling
Restructuring the engineering dept changed the responsibilities to:

• To manage and implement all the electrical engineering in house projects and to act as client / customer
liaison for the electrical and automation part of the Brown Fields extension project (Ship loader 4 route)
and the Greenfields study project (Estimated value R1400 Million)
• To investigate production bottlenecks and capacity enchancement projects, produce reports, justify capex,
manage and implement projects as listed.
• Ship loader 3: complete electrical / control refurbishment: 30-day shutdown to break in and commission.
• Development, installation and commissioning of new AC variable speed drives on S/R1, S/R2, S/R7,
S/R11, and R9 with a 7 day shutdown break in to production
• Slew drive system (torque equalization systems) on all stacker reclaimers S/R 7, S/R 11 & R9 done,

of R25 Million.
• Managed and controlled the electrical refurbishment and electrical / mechanical interface for the
reconstruction of Stacker Reclaimer 7 to full production, non-stop for 52 days.
• Responsible for producing Capex budgets for 5 year and 10 year expansion requirements on the HT system
network reticulation, (1998-1999)
• Presented expansion, Capex and refurbishment budget requirements to Coal Owners Directors Committee
and International Coal Consultants Westmar for rollout and approval.
• New expansion feed power supply to allow for a 91 million tonne terminal.
A new Technical Services Department was created to manage all the large projects resulting from the expansion
requirements.
A new post was created: Engineering Manager Electrical Services:
Duties:
• To act as customer / client, liasing with the Technical services department to ensure standards and
objectives are met in the rollout of the new 5 –10 year HT upgrade plan with maintaining production output
requirements.
• HT Upgrade Plan included the laying of an extra 18 Km 132Kv cable, new design in feeding RBCT from
“3 out of 4” 40 Mva 132/11Kv from the Municipal substation due to the loading requirements at RBCT.
• Maintain all the existing electrical, HT distribution, reticulation and electrical services, Execute some
refurbishment, “ fit, form, function “ upgrade type of projects using outside contractors.
• Outsourcing of services:
• Building electrical services, air conditioning, hi-mast lights, rail track signalling and testing of HV
protection equipment.

ACHIEVEMENTS
1. Development /modification with Alstom / G.E.C engineers a new failsafe mechanical interlocking system
for 3.3Kv vacuum contactors. (Over 80 installed at RBCT) the present standard for the G.E.C. STV
switchgear installed around South Africa, over 2000 installations in South Africa
2. Investigated and promoted a THRIP (Technology, Human Resources In Partnership) research project for
the investigation into conveyor belt mechanical failures / maintenance management with Natal University
Innovation centre (Prof M.Allport), research project into 3rd
year at RBCT as part of MSC Thesis for
mechanical students.
3. S/R7 fire extensive damage in 1998: Rebuild and commission machine in 52 days non-stop.
4. Facilitator on “ Effective Work Relations” programme as directed by Organisational development expert
contractors to focus and develop black improvement and empowerment at the workplace creating a
focused, effective workforce for maximum productivity during the political transitional years, 2 year
programme,1988-1989.
5. Facilitator and “driver” responsible for the industrial electrical part ( AC drives, conveyor system drives
upgrade, PLC’s automation systems ) of “capacity enhancement “ projects and “de- bottlenecking “

6. Site Manager / Coordinator for duration of project to rebuild 2 stacker reclaimers central structural sections

( 7 meter diameter, bearing cost R2.0 Million in 1986 ) on stacker reclaimer 7
First changeout of its type in coal export industry in the world on Stevenson –Adamson Stacker Reclaimer
design.
8. Responsible for the turnkey installation of ceramic tiling of all conveyor chutes, transfer towers in the
yardmachines section of the terminal, installed over a period of 3 years due to budget restraints and manage
changeover from metal lineings to ceramic.
9. Committee member of Richardsbay branch of S.A.I.M.C. ( South African Institute of
Measurement and Control ) from 1984 to 1998.

Job Title: Engineering Manager; SOGMIP ( Mozambique ) Business: Provide vertically integrated engineering solutions in the mining, materials handling, oil & gas, fuel refineries , process engineering , heavy engineering industry and power generation industries. Development of new business and engineering support for SOGMIP & Associates projects in the fields of engineering and operations in SADEC countries. The engineering business entails new EPCM projects construction and maintenance of new and existing operations. Personal Profile . I am an Electrical Engineer with Mechanical Engineering experience, I have extensive practical experience in engineering and project management, design, project and construction management, commissioning and testing and maintenance. My experience has been gained from maintenance and projects in Industrial Plants, Coal exporting terminals, Power Generation, Distribution and Design, Communications systems, Test department of Escom, Sugar Mill’s, Aluminium smelters and Sawmilling and process plants. This has included Maximizing Equipment Effectiveness programs, TPM and TQM in the production environment. I have also gained vast experience with Maintenance Management Systems, SAP and RCM, all versions and the implementation there of. I used the latest RACS , BCS and PX system project management tools as developed and used by BHP Billiton worldwide to manage and audit projects in the Aluminium industry. Analysing, developing and implementing solutions for production enhancement forms the greater part of my past industrial experience. My experience gained, has been in both the local and international markets Electrical and Control Experience My electrical and controls experience primarily is in power generation, coal materials handling systems, aluminium smelters, covering the whole spectrum of the electrical engineering discipline, ranging to UHF radio and microwave communication systems. Experience includes commissioning of turbo alternators and synchronisation with Escom grid, Emergency Generation Plants, UPS’s, switchyard and distribution transformers, 132Kv, 33Kv, 22Kv and 11Kv switch gear including double ended and ring feeders, power factor correction, both high and low voltage Motor Control Centres and networks. PLC’s, AC+DC. VSD drives, Scada systems, High volume measuring systems, soft start drives via networks like Profi-Bus, Device Net with mechanical, electrical and Instrumentation systems interfaces. Design and implementation of interlocks for medium voltage switchgear. Mechanical Experience My mechanical experience ranges from steam and power generation, Humidification steam and the distribution of steam, Vapour recompression, Power distribution and conversion, Maintenance and upgrade of Stacker Reclaimers and high volume conveyor systems, Sampling plants, condition & performance based monitoring and interpretation to maintenance management systems.

Production improvements, redesigns elimination of bottlenecks in sugar refineries, sawmills, plywood mills and aluminium process plants. Promotion of MSc degree research projects with THRIP and Natal University on conveyor belt systems monitoring and performance. Structural investigations, repair procedures and implementation of repairs on Stacker Reclaimers, special gas treatment cooling towers and carbon bake furnace flue gas exhaust system redesign and replacements. Business The JV supplied specialized concrete to 5 contractors and implemented specific designed concrete plinths and foundations for conveyors and machine structures for phase 1 of a 12Million tone coal processing and storage plant. Duties: • Manage the whole site with 3 civil engineers, 2 Land surveyors, 6 foreman, artisan workforce of 25 staff and labour of 80 people, implemented designs. • Deliver concrete to specification and project schedule. • Supply, install and deliver materials, sand, stone, cement, cut and bend steel for structures, interface with logistic supply dept in Maputo for these materials. • Manage the health and safety aspect of the contract and the contractual agreements ( FIDIC contract ) with the client. • Manage PLA ( Project Labour Agreement ) with Riversdale Mining agreements to workforce management and disbandment of labour force. • Ensure civil engineering designs and solutions with encumbent civil engineers and surveyors conforms to scope and specifications. • Managed mechanized earthmoving and trenching equipment, concrete, sand, stone trucks, front end loaders, busses, site vehicles, field workshop and mechanics. Achievements: • Re- established a working relationship with main client, Riversdale & Sedgman, Project Management Consultants to solve serious communications breakdown between contractor and client. • Improved the delivery schedule according to Clients needs, achieved and maintained targets of “zero delays” for all 5 contractual customers for the duration of contract. • Established a “zero harm” safety standard for the JV, eliminated safety incidents of JV workforce through effective safety management procedures. • Completed arbitration claims, documentation justifying claims against non- payment of certificates and FIDIC contract based scope change claims. Workshops in sawmills and Mechanized transport to service the felling and recovering of timber to sawmills. Duties: Responsible for the complete engineering maintenance and projects functions for 3 sawmills, one plywood mill, transport workshops, company properties, buildings, infrastructure, roads, water & sewage plants, roads, electrical power and reticulation. Responsible person under the HSE act for the 4 sawmill plants and Plywood factory: Equipment included: wood chip fueled Steam boilers, steam reticulation systems, compressors, HV reticulation, conveyors, chemical process plants, large mechanical saws, dust suppression handling systems, belt & chain conveyor systems, Plant automation, PLC & Scada systems. Steam operated wood kiln dryer systems and control systems. Achievements: • Introduced a planned maintenance system based on ‘equipment effectiveness measurement systems” • Equipment lists identified and maintenance frequencies established. • Extensive artisan evaluation and supportive training programmes planned • Presented complete project plan & Capex for new automated timber grading system for Langeni sawmill. • Weza quadsaw system: Replaced and commissioned complete control system ( hydraulic & PLC control system) to supply final product to within OEM original tolerance specification ( mechanical system 20 years old). Reasons for leaving: The wood sawmilling industry were experiencing grave financial problems due to no expenditure on maintenance and capital improvements for 15 years. The initial drawcard to be employed by Merensky was the promise to be Project Manager for a R1.2 billion super sawmill project in Kokstad, next to the new plywood mill. This project never materialized. However due to mis- reading the international market, Kokstad plywood mill was closed down and assets sold to York Timbers. Labour unrest closed down Weza sawmill for 3 months A call to rescue a civil engineering project in Mozambique prompted resignation. o Owner / Director of HenryCaslteton Consulting: Business: Supply consultancy services to Industry: Aluminium, Sugar, Process, Wood and Municipalities. Duties: Design of electrical systems, drives and control systems complete for clients, mainly mechanical main contractors where subcontract electrical work had to be supplied. Ahievements: P.O. RICHARDSBAY COAL TERMINAL. A new Technical Services Department was created to manage all the large projects resulting from the expansion requirements.
