DIGITIZATION
The department manages digitization for all of the
Smithsonian Libraries' including book digitization
for the Biodiversity Heritage Library as well as special
digitization projects for archival and manuscript material.
Though most of our mass-scanning is done in partnership
with the Internet Archive, our in-house imaging center
provides high quality digital images for online display as
well as gallery exhibition design and installation; print
publications of the Institution; and other publication needs.
The imaging center is the primary digitizer of all large-
format (folio, map) materials, manuscripts, archival
collections, and exceptionally fragile material.

Provost J. Dennis O'Connor and Director Barbara
J. Smith visited the Libraries' World Wide Web
Home Page in March when Systems Department
head Tom Garnett conducted a preview of the
Libraries pilot re-publishing project. Scheduled to
go online in May, the pilot project is a re-
publication of John C. Ewers's "Hair Pipes in
Plains Indian Adornment," a 1957 study published
by the Bureau of American Ethnology. Garnett also
gave a demonstration of the Libraries' exhibition,
Science and the Artist's Book, and the Home
Pages of several branch libraries.

Libraries digitization:

34. Being digital-first is about more than adopting
new technologies. It means prioritizing the
needs of our audiences and users, engaging
them with relevant, compelling content, and
meeting them wherever they seek information. To
do this, we need to build digital skills and
sensibilities into the organization; ensuring the
knowledge we produce can be preserved,
accessed, linked, and integrated into the global
information ecosystem.
Greater Reach, Greater Relevance, and Profound Impact
35. Greater reach and engagement, measured by
macro-level metrics for online audiences and by
qualitative assessments of the visitor experience,
both onsite and online
Continued progress in collections digitization
Greater Reach, Greater Relevance, and Profound Impact
36. “Digital First” organizational transformation, measured
by hiring of staff with critical skills, training of existing
staff in digital skills, funding allocated to digital
requirements, etc.

a little way past them into the impossible. – Arthur C. Clarke
