Don was born to Roy Andrew
and Mary Strachn Childress on
March 4, 1936 in Dyersburg,
Tennessee. He was married
to Judy Bargery Childress and
they made their home in the
community that he loved, Bogota.
He was a faithful husband, a great
father and a devoted Christian.
Don graduated Dyersburg High
School and served in the U.S.
Army before returning to Dyer
County to continue his family’s
farming operation. In 2009,
Childress Farms was recognized
as a Century Farm recipient.
The improvement of Bogota
and Dyer County was of utmost
importance to Don. Through his
active participation in various
organizations, he worked
tirelessly to make his community
a wonderful place to live. Most
of his work was not to benefit
himself, but he volunteered to
help all of those around him. Don
and his wife Judy were active in
the Bogota community, working
hard to raise funds to support
the Bogota Community Center.
Don was a life-long member and
treasurer of the Bogota Church
of Christ. He was President of
Elbridge Water Association and
was a Dyer County Commissioner
for 14 years. He also served
on various other boards and
organizations including: Dyer
County Farm Bureau, Bogota
Drainage District, and the Bogota
Volunteer Fire Department.
Don and Judy were
married for 54 years and
have five children: Julie
Childress Moore,
Wally Childress,
Tony Childress,
Jill Childress
Friedmann and
Jennifer Childress
Hampton. His
grandchildren
are: Drew, Dale,
Doug, Kathy,
Olivia, Emma, Trey,
Ellie, Adam and
Mallory; and great-
grandchildren, Carter,
Jared, Jace Aiden, Ace and
Jacks.
The Dyer County Fair holds
special memories for the Childress
family. Don had a fondness
for hogs as shown in his active
support of the Dyer County Junior
Market Livestock Association.
He seldom missed a night of the
fair. He was most often spotted,
with fiddlestick in hand, visiting
with folks on a bench at the food
pavilion.
Anyone that knew Don knows
that his family was the delight and
loves of his life. His children say
that, “Daddy was the most loving,
giving and determined man. He
taught us to love God and family
and the value of hard work. He
will forever be missed, but we are
so blessed to have had him as our
Daddy. We try every day to make
him proud because he always
made us proud.”
Don lived with a simple
philosophy – to make the world a
little better than how he found it.
That is why he was so dedicated
to his home in Bogota and Dyer
County. He always said that
going down the bluff and crossing
the Obion River Bridge was like
entering his heaven on Earth.

Letter from the Fair Board President:
Mr. Joseph Townson
Greetings!
As President of the Dyer County Fair Association, I would like to
welcome you to the 66th annual Dyer County Fair. Whether you are
visiting for the first time or you are a lifelong attendant, we hope the
fun and excitement of this unique tradition will bring you back for
many years to come. From our humble beginnings in 1947, to this
year’s event, the Dyer County Fair has continued to celebrate our
sense of community through agriculture, art, and families for many
years.
We have an exciting week full of entertainment, contests, pageants,
and demonstrations planned. This fun filled event provides our
community with the opportunity to participate in the week’s events
and to showcase our county’s best. I can vividly remember the
excitement I felt during my first fair experience at the old fairgrounds
on Harrell Avenue years ago. My wish is that you and your family
will experience the same excitement I did and that I have every year
since.
This outstanding event would not be possible without the generous
support of our sponsors, volunteers, board members, families, local
businesses, government, and everyone who participates in this six day
event. On behalf of the board, I would like to say “Thank You” for
your hard work and dedication in making our fair a premier event in
West Tennessee.
I would also like to thank my wife Kerrie and our daughter Kloye,
for their continued support for me as I have served on the board and
now as I serve as president of the Dyer County Fair.
From our family to yours, we hope you have “A Bloomin’ Good
Time” at the Dyer County Fair!
Joseph Townson

Sponsor of the Day Sponsor of the Day
Josh Abbott Band is a country band from the state
of Texas. They will playing Saturday at the FCNB
Amphitheater.
According to their website:
Weeks before its Valentine’s Day release on
iTunes, the Josh Abbott Band’s “Touch” was
already well on its way toward being one of the
most talked-about songs in Texas music of 2012.
Granted, the hot-streak momentum of Abbott’s
career had a lot to do with that. In the wake of
the breakout success of “Oh, Tonight” (which
climbed to No. 44 on Billboard’s country chart)
and the title track from 2010’s regional smash
“She’s Like Texas,” created a stir that reached all
the way to music executives in Nashville and New
York City. That set up pretty much any track that
the 31-year-old singer-songwriter picked to be the
lead single from his band’s much-anticipated third
album nicely, ensuring it was bound to garner a fair
amount of attention. But from the very first time it
was played in concert or over the airwaves, it was
clear that “Touch” had a lot more going for it than
just good timing. From the erotic tension and release of
its slow-burning verses and soaring chorus to the dramatic
crescendo of fiddle and guitars at the outro, it’s a song that
captures every ounce of the passion, talent, and vision that’s
propelled the Josh Abbott Band to the forefront of the Texas
music scene in record time. And as the rest of Small Town
Family Dream proves convincingly, they’re here to stay.
Truth is, that’s been pretty evident for a while now —
even though the Josh Abbott Band has only been recording
and touring for half a decade. Abbott didn’t even begin
writing songs until around 2004, when he was still in
grad school at Texas Tech in Lubbock. A diehard Texas
country fan, he’d picked up guitar a few years earlier,
mainly to strum along to his favorite Pat Green songs. He
vividly recalls the epiphany he had at a concert one night
at Lubbock’s Blue Light when the notion of writing and
playing his own music — maybe even for a living — first
took root.
“It happened
to be the Randy
Rogers Band
playing that
night, but it
could have
been Pat or
Wade Bowen or
Cory Morrow, any of those guys that I saw over the years,”
Abbott explains. “I always had this fascination with what
they were doing. I’d go to their concerts and there’d be
hundreds if not thousands of college kids singing along.
That night at the Blue Light, I just remember watching
the band and thinking, I want to do this…I think I can do
this.”
SATURDAY-September8
Saturday - September 7 - 8:00p.m. at the FCNB Amphitheater
Jeff Whitlow & The Old Barn Band will present a tribute to
George Jones Thursday at the FCNB Amphitheater.
If you look up Traditional Country Music in the dictionary,
you would find the name Jeff Whitlow right there along with
Merle Haggard, George Jones, Vern Gosdin and Johnny Cash.
With his delightfully strong, baritone, country voice he has
attained much respect from across teh country in the last few
years. Whether he is singing a Merle Haggard ballard, or
lightning fast tune from George Jones, the results are always
the same. You get an extremely fascinated crowd and the
entire audience can’t contain from clapping their hands, or
tapping their toes to the pounding traditional country beat.

SORGHUM VALLEY
Sorghum Valley is a miniature settlement in a quaint country atmosphere surrounding the Old Sorghum Mill– a scene from
Dyer County’s pioneer days. Cross over the covered bridge where the sweet sounds of bluegrass and gospel music can be
heard throughout the valley.
A tour down Sorghum Valley’s wooden sidewalk gives you a glimpse of yesteryear’s businesses. Sorghum valley has
everything from a funeral parlor with horse drawn carriage to a Dyersburg Cotton Products exhibit with one of their
machines from its opening in 1928.
Come by Thursday morning for the sorghum recipe contest and your chance to try some on a biscuit!

He was married to Judy Bargery Childress and they made their home in the community that he loved, Bogota. He was a faithful husband, a great father and a devoted Christian. Don graduated Dyersburg High School and served in the U.S. Army before returning to Dyer County to continue his family’s farming operation. In 2009, Childress Farms was recognized as a Century Farm recipient. The improvement of Bogota and Dyer County was of utmost importance to Don. Through his active participation in various organizations, he worked tirelessly to make his community a wonderful place to live. Most of his work was not to benefit himself, but he volunteered to help all of those around him. Don and his wife Judy were active in the Bogota community, working hard to raise funds to support the Bogota Community Center. Don was a life-long member and treasurer of the Bogota Church of Christ. He was President of Elbridge Water Association and was a Dyer County Commissioner for 14 years. He also served on various other boards and organizations including: Dyer County Farm Bureau, Bogota Drainage District, and the Bogota Volunteer Fire Department. Don and Judy were married for 54 years and have five children: Julie Childress Moore, Wally Childress, Tony Childress, Jill Childress Friedmann and Jennifer Childress Hampton. His grandchildren are: Drew, Dale, Doug, Kathy, Olivia, Emma, Trey, Ellie, Adam and Mallory; and great- grandchildren, Carter, Jared, Jace Aiden, Ace and Jacks. The Dyer County Fair holds special memories for the Childress family. Don had a fondness for hogs as shown in his active support of the Dyer County Junior Market Livestock Association. He seldom missed a night of the fair. He was most often spotted, with fiddlestick in hand, visiting with folks on a bench at the food pavilion. Anyone that knew Don knows that his family was the delight and loves of his life. His children say that, “Daddy was the most loving, giving and determined man. He taught us to love God and family and the value of hard work. He will forever be missed, but we are so blessed to have had him as our Daddy. We try every day to make him proud because he always made us proud.” Don lived with a simple philosophy – to make the world a little better than how he found it. That is why he was so dedicated to his home in Bogota and Dyer County. He always said that going down the bluff and crossing the Obion River Bridge was like entering his heaven on Earth. All exhibits or events for competition must be held at the Dyer County Fairgrounds during the week of the Fair, with the exception of fashion revues. Letter from the Fair Board President: Mr. Joseph Townson Greetings! As President of the Dyer County Fair Association, I would like to welcome you to the 66th annual Dyer County Fair. Whether you are visiting for the first time or you are a lifelong attendant, we hope the fun and excitement of this unique tradition will bring you back for many years to come. From our humble beginnings in 1947, to this year’s event, the Dyer County Fair has continued to celebrate our sense of community through agriculture, art, and families for many years. We have an exciting week full of entertainment, contests, pageants, and demonstrations planned. This fun filled event provides our community with the opportunity to participate in the week’s events and to showcase our county’s best. I can vividly remember the excitement I felt during my first fair experience at the old fairgrounds on Harrell Avenue years ago. My wish is that you and your family will experience the same excitement I did and that I have every year since. This outstanding event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, volunteers, board members, families, local businesses, government, and everyone who participates in this six day event. On behalf of the board, I would like to say “Thank You” for your hard work and dedication in making our fair a premier event in West Tennessee. I would also like to thank my wife Kerrie and our daughter Kloye, for their continued support for me as I have served on the board and now as I serve as president of the Dyer County Fair. From our family to yours, we hope you have “A Bloomin’ Good Time” at the Dyer County Fair! They will playing Saturday at the FCNB Amphitheater. According to their website: Weeks before its Valentine’s Day release on iTunes, the Josh Abbott Band’s “Touch” was already well on its way toward being one of the most talked-about songs in Texas music of 2012. Granted, the hot-streak momentum of Abbott’s career had a lot to do with that. In the wake of the breakout success of “Oh, Tonight” (which climbed to No. 44 on Billboard’s country chart) and the title track from 2010’s regional smash “She’s Like Texas,” created a stir that reached all the way to music executives in Nashville and New York City. That set up pretty much any track that the 31-year-old singer-songwriter picked to be the lead single from his band’s much-anticipated third album nicely, ensuring it was bound to garner a fair amount of attention. But from the very first time it was played in concert or over the airwaves, it was clear that “Touch” had a lot more going for it than just good timing. From the erotic tension and release of its slow-burning verses and soaring chorus to the dramatic crescendo of fiddle and guitars at the outro, it’s a song that captures every ounce of the passion, talent, and vision that’s propelled the Josh Abbott Band to the forefront of the Texas music scene in record time. And as the rest of Small Town Family Dream proves convincingly, they’re here to stay. Truth is, that’s been pretty evident for a while now — even though the Josh Abbott Band has only been recording and touring for half a decade. Abbott didn’t even begin writing songs until around 2004, when he was still in grad school at Texas Tech in Lubbock. A diehard Texas country fan, he’d picked up guitar a few years earlier, mainly to strum along to his favorite Pat Green songs. He vividly recalls the epiphany he had at a concert one night at Lubbock’s Blue Light when the notion of writing and playing his own music — maybe even for a living — first took root. “It happened to be the Randy Rogers Band playing that night, but it could have been Pat or Wade Bowen or Cory Morrow, any of those guys that I saw over the years,” Abbott explains. “I always had this fascination with what they were doing. I’d go to their concerts and there’d be hundreds if not thousands of college kids singing along. That night at the Blue Light, I just remember watching the band and thinking, I want to do this…I think I can do this.” SATURDAY-September8 Saturday - September 7 - 8:00p.m. at the FCNB Amphitheater Jeff Whitlow & The Old Barn Band will present a tribute to George Jones Thursday at the FCNB Amphitheater. If you look up Traditional Country Music in the dictionary, you would find the name Jeff Whitlow right there along with Merle Haggard, George Jones, Vern Gosdin and Johnny Cash. With his delightfully strong, baritone, country voice he has attained much respect from across teh country in the last few years. Whether he is singing a Merle Haggard ballard, or lightning fast tune from George Jones, the results are always the same. You get an extremely fascinated crowd and the entire audience can’t contain from clapping their hands, or tapping their toes to the pounding traditional country beat.
