TAMPA, Fla – Former Super Y League standout Katie Cousins was named the 2013-14 Gatorade
National Girls Soccer Player of the Year this week, making her the first athlete from Jefferson
Forest High School in Forest, Virginia to receive the award recognizing not only outstanding
athletic excellence, but also academic excellence and character both on and off the field.
“Katie is a quiet leader who lets her game speak for itself,” Richmond Kickers coach Rob Ukrop
told Gatorade. “What she does on the field - controlling the tempo and solving problems for her
teammates - is so unique and special that there are very few women players in the United
States with this ability.”
Cousins participated in the SYL as a member of the Richmond Kickers in the 2010 and 2011
seasons. Her debut campaign saw her find the back of the net eight times while registering one
assist as the teamreached the 2010 North American Finals. Her most impressive season came
in the 2011 with the U14 side, as she tallied 11 goals to go along with seven assists, helping lead
her team to an undefeated 12-0-0 season.
Cousins has also represented the United States as a member of both the U18 and U20
Women’s National Teams. At the 2013 12 Nations Tournament held in La Manga, Spain she
appeared in all three matches for the U-20 side, assisting on the opening goal in a 1-1 draw
against Norway.
Despite missing three games of the regular season due to National Team commitments, the 5-
foot junior midfielder finished the regular season with eight goals and five assists, leading the
Jefferson Forest Cavaliers to a 13-1 regular-season record.
Ranked first in the nation by Topdrawersoccer.com and verbally committed to play at the
University of Tennessee, Cousins is one of the 12 Finalists for the Gatorade Female Athlete of
the Year which will be announced in Los Angeles before the ESPY awards in July.
