Online interaction & Telecollaboration is becoming 
increasingly popular in education as a way to 
enhance: 
 Language acquisition (Canto et al., 2013; Chapelle, 2001; Lamy & 
© 2013 TILA 
Background

 Intercultural Communicative Competence (Belz & Thorne,

Background 
 Most experiences and research results reported so 
far on telecollaboration refer to tertiary language 
education (Pol, 2013). 
 Need to focus on secondary education 
in order to find out whether the positive research 
results on telecollaboration related to adults at 
tertiary education do apply to younger students who 
are learning languages in quite a different 
educational setting.

• The tool used does not seem to have an impact on the 
scores.

  • 4. © 2013 TILA Background  Most experiences and research results reported so far on telecollaboration refer to tertiary language education (Pol, 2013).  Need to focus on secondary education in order to find out whether the positive research results on telecollaboration related to adults at tertiary education do apply to younger students who are learning languages in quite a different educational setting. 4

High scores on: © 2013 TILA • Comfort • Motivation • Satisfaction • Especially enjoyment (M=4.29, SD=0.64) Students did not feel especially nervous when speaking in the TL (M=3.15, SD=1.06) Students feel more at ease in OpenSim (M=2.77) compared to Skype (M=3.00) and BigBlueButton (M=3.38). 18 Results

  6. Existing questionnaires usually designed for adults. Items have to be shorter and in simple language. Avoid lengthy questionnaires. Students are not used to Likert scale questionnaires.
