Girls Do Digital is a free learning hub where women (or anyone, really) can learn hands-on, practical digital skills to start their own home-based freelance business.
4. It gets a lot of press coverage, but no one talks about
the women who are sitting home, wanting to work but
not finding a career worth putting their kids in daycare.
Marketing companies “tease” women with a chance at
work-at-home income, but require investment. A
degree program seems years away for many women
and puts them thousands into debt.
Is there a work-from-home opportunity that doesn’t
require awkwardly selling things to your family and
friends or answering phones for $10 an hour?
Yes, in tech.

5. THE SMALL BUSINESS DILEMMA
Then there are the hundreds of thousands of small businesses in America. They want to establish a web presence and
digital marketing capability to better represent their business, they know that more than 90% of Americans Google a
business before engaging with them. The problem is, when they Google “Web Design” there are thousands of
agencies who want to charge them $10k+, for a basic website, which is a huge investment for a small mom and pop
shop. Instead, they rely on mediocre website builder tools, or give up the idea entirely.
And you could help them at a fraction of the price.
6. My mission is to create a series of courses
that empower women to know that they
have the digital skills so in demand, and
help them build a career that’s lucrative,
fulfilling, and (most importantly) debt-free.

9. DIGITAL LITERACY
If you build two websites a month, you will make $5,000. Even as a
brand new designer who's never done this, you should easily be able to
make at least $1,500 per site for your first few small business
informational websites. Similarly, if you are doing social media
management, html email templates, basic graphic design: YOU WILL be
able to charge $40-$50 an hour, and people will pay it.
10. But you need years of college, student loans, and a degree
to get to that level of technical experience, right? FALSE.
When I started my career in tech I had ZERO courses in
coding, ZERO education in digital marketing, and ZERO
experience in web design. I taught myself, as I went, by
just doing it.
SO HOW DO YOU GET THERE?

A DIGITAL CONSULTANT
"I BUILD WEBSITES AND MANAGE MARKETING

12. So who the heck am I and
why should you listen?

I’m Lily, and my life has been absolutely transformed by the tech skills
I want to show you. I got pregnant in the middle of college, and faced
with the reality of being a single mom, I looked at my life and what I
could do to provide for my kid. I had started designing and coding for
fun in the Myspace days, and continued to casually do so in high
school and college. Much to my surprise, companies were willing to
pay – well! – for basic things that I had done as an intern: HTML
email newsletters and simple websites. I started freelancing in the
digital space, and built a reputation for myself, first as a consultant,
then in time, with a full career as a corporate Creative Director.
13. I CAN GIVE YOU THE TOOLS IN A
MATTER OF HOURS, NOT YEARS
Why? Frankly, because I think it's BS that the digital and tech space is ruled by a bunch of guys. Most computer
science grads probably are less ready to build websites than you are now but they get jobs! You do not need to
know how to hand code an entire site in HTML to start your digital career. I think there are a lot of great small
businesses with really crappy websites who could use some help. There are so many women who need work at
home income and a path into a career where their skills are valued and needed. I have a group of good friends
who were interested in learning what I have to teach; I decided to just make it open for everyone in the process.
15. Everything you do in the digital space has to
be marketable in an age of good design and
user experience. Most of the time, small
businesses can’t afford a design agency. Enter,
you, Ms. Do It All Digital Guru! You need to
know how to brand a business, creating logos
and by helping the business build the initial
visual collateral it needs to succeed. We’ll
cover logos, color, typography, layout,
imagery, and other key design principles,
using free and affordable tools.

The whole of the web starts with a few very
key building blocks. Did you ever play around
with Myspace and Livejournal formatting?
Congrats, that’s HTML and CSS. Very basic
knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Javascript can
get you moving in the direction you need to
start building and formatting websites, email
templates, landing pages, and more. It may be
code, but it’s really not as hard as people
make it out to be. I’ll show you the basics,
which we’ll use in later lessons to build upon.
Have you ever wondered how to build a
website? Where the web address comes from?
Where the website is stored? We’ll go over all
that. Then we’ll use the world’s most used
website platform, Wordpress, to learn how to
build and construct responsive (mobile-
friendly) sites for clients so that they can
update content without code. We’ll cover how
to build pages, define typography and layouts,
define our own styles using CSS, and craft the
perfect small business site for your clients.
16. Social Media is everywhere in today’s world,
and so many small businesses don’t know how
to use it properly to promote their business,
engage with customers, and generate positive
buzz. We’ll be talking about how to initially
brand social channels, manage a company’s
social presence across media, solicit positive
reviews, create a content posting schedule
and social media plan, and build a business
managing social profiles (a great monthly
income earner) and posting the right content.

You know the pretty (or not so pretty but
yours will be) promotional emails and
newsletters that come into your inbox with
colors and pictures and logos? Those are all
HTML emails. We’ll talk about how to design
and build them, where to send them, make
sure they’re responsive and compatible across
email clients, how to help your clients build
email lists, and how to obey CAN-SPAM laws.
Regularly scheduled emails are also great
monthly recurring income for you.
How the heck does one get started running
their own freelance business? Where do you
find clients? How do you advertise and get the
word out? What’s the first step to building a
portfolio where people will hire you? What
the heck do you charge for these services?
How do you invoice and take credit cards?
How do the taxes work? If I want to, can I use
these skills to get a salaried job with benefits?
Do I need a degree or certifications for
credibility? All these and more, answered.
17. My Promise
If you start doing this and run into issues, I will always be here to help you. Via Facebook,
via Email, via Zoom, I’ll always be here to answer your questions. I can’t do it for you
(Lord knows I sure as hell do not have time for that) but I will not fault you for asking
questions, and we can figure it out together. My ideal is that we build a community of
people doing this, and can all help each other get even better. I can’t promise not to
ever be sarcastic and snarky, but I’ll do my damndest to support you!
