SUMMARY
OF THE
PROJECT
CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
Major threats to
biodiversity
•Climate change
•Loss of biodiversity
•Habitat destruction/ Extinction of
species
•Overexploitation
•Deforestation
1. CLIMATE
CHANGE
• Identifiable change in the climate of Earth as a whole that
lasts for an extended period of time (decades or longer)
• When due to natural processes, it is usually referred to
as global climate variability
• Usually refers to changes forced by human activities
that change the atmosphere
Global Climate Change
• Over the last 100 years,
since the industrial
revolution, greenhouse
gases have rapidly
increased in the
atmosphere
• This is due to human
activities which release
greenhouse gases
Human activity
The Greenhouse Effect
• More greenhouse gases trap
more heat in the atmosphere,
leading to global warming
• Since 1880, global temp has
increased by almost 1°C
• How much this rises depends
on how much more greenhouse
gas is released
GLOBAL WARMING
Climate Changes Currently
Happening
•Increase of the temperatures from 1880
•Reduction of the sea Polar ice
Main evidences of the Climate
Change
What's going
to happen?
• Warming and sea level rise will
continue and will probably occur
more quickly than what we’ve
already seen
• Even if greenhouse gases are
stabilized, this will probably
continue to occur for centuries
• Some effects may be permanent
• Coral systems and other unique
ecosystems cannot handle
higher temperatures well
• Wildfires will increase
• Up to 30% of species will be at
increased risk for extinction due
to the rapid changes in their
ecosystems
Effects on Ecosystems
• Changing seasons
• Drier & longer droughtS
• Increased temperatures & heat waves
• Melting glaciers & polar ice
• Sea level rise
• More intense rainfall & increased likelihood of floods
• Extreme winds & stronger storms
Here are some climate & weather
events impacted by climate change
2. Loss of
biodiversity
Species in danger of extinction
Overfishing
• Several marine species are in danger of
extinction because of overexploitation
• Baltic cod
• Whales
• Red Tuna
• Hake
• Sole
3.
Deforestation
• Deforestation is the purposeful clearing
of forested land.
• Forests have been razed to make
space for agriculture and animal
grazing, and to obtain wood for fuel,
manufacturing, and construction.
What and Why?
• Deforestation can result in more carbon
dioxide being released into the
atmosphere.
• That is because trees take in carbon
dioxide from the air for photosynthesis,
and carbon is locked chemically in their
wood.
Consequences of de deforestation
Main areas affected
1. AMAZONIA
2. CENTRAL AFRICA
3. SOUTHEAST ASIA
4. AUSTRALIA
