media world”
Beginning her career in regional NSW, Natarsha went on to
present her first news bulletin at the age of 21 for the ABC, and
not long after secured herself a position as a national journalist
and presenter for Network Ten. Having read across many major
news bulletins and featured on a number of other Ten programs,
Natarsha has experienced the full force of the media industry
and what it means to be a prominent female figure within it.
Drawing on raising a family while managing her leadership profile
under the watchful public eye, Natarsha will explore:
• Overcoming constant challenges and triumphing in the
small wins
• How the industry has evolved in its treatment of women
since entering the media

“The Australian Media Outlook 2015-19: It is
important to be innovative and have a go”
The past few years have seen unprecedented, widespread
change that has turned much of the media industry and
traditional communication roles upside-down. Increased
mergers, downsizing, emerging disruptive technologies
and the constantly moving ‘Twittersphere’ has made it
increasingly difficult for managers and executives to navigate
their organisations through this unfamiliar territory, and predict
what is around the corner. Forecasting the media landscape
is Megan’s domain, leading the PwC flagship research report
into the outlook of Australian media and entertainment. In
this session, Megan will discuss how she progressed to an
executive role and overcame the challenges of change:
• Strategies for advancing into core, strategic roles within
your organisation
• Methods for managing change and leading through uncertainty
• What does the future hold for media?

“Take your talent by the horns and go for it. Don’t be
afraid of new technology and use your intuition”
When the internet became readily available almost 20 years
ago it changed the course of media (and many lives) forever.
Media professionals on all levels have experienced the shift to
digital. Some have adapted well, others are still on the learning
curve. With decades in news media under her belt, Helen has
mastered new media. She played a pivotal part in transforming
the ABC News Online website from a mainly word-based
site, to one that incorporates video, images and audio. As an
experienced journalism, broadcast and social media trainer,
internationally and locally, Helen will deliver practical skills on:
• Why knowledge of new media carries so much weight in today’s
industry and how leaders can use it to their career benefit
• Be a social media-savvy leader – How to successfully, and
ethically, engage in digital communications
• Where the industry has got digital right, and where it needs
some improvement

Leading with confidence – Rise to industry challenges
While we are seeing improvement and progress in female
representation generally, the traditionally male-dominated media
industry continues its gender imbalance in senior executive
roles. This, together with the rise of new media and concerns
around digital disruption, has made career progression an
increasingly difficult task. Women in media and communications
roles can enhance their leadership presence and career
advancement by cultivating a sense of self-assurance and
believing in their own capacity to overcome challenges of
today’s media environment. Panellists will discuss their journey
to leadership success and how they overcame any odds,
uncertainties and setbacks along the way. Explore:
• Methods for leading with resilience
• How to confidently back yourself
• Techniques for overcoming unexpected obstacles

“Its more of a work / life juggle than a work / life
balance. Some weeks you’ll nail it more than others”
As a senior female in the demanding media and communications
field, achieving a vibrant and rewarding career can come at a cost
to work / life balance. Finding time to enjoy motherhood, achieve
personal goals, and put in the expected hours to be considered
for a senior role, are common challenges for executive women.
Having taken time off to raise a family, and hitting the pause button
on a leadership position in an ever-changing communications
space, Tracy will explore how female leaders can achieve a
professional and personal balance. Discuss:
• Having it all – Ruthless prioritisation and smart time management
• Negotiation skills – Tricks and tips to make it work for you
• Working out what you want – Be honest with yourself and

“Feeling uncomfortable in a new role is a good sign –
it’s a natural part of developing and learning new skills”
Refined communication and engagement practices are
invaluable to reaching a respected senior management role.
Successful leaders are able to cut through any ‘noise’ and
connect employees and stakeholders to the important issues
at hand. This proficiency is especially crucial to lead in today’s
evolving communications arena. Rita will discuss how she has
managed a career in communications that has spanned more
than 20 years, using it to discuss what strategies women can
engage to move from junior roles, to a leading position with
responsibility for their organisation’s communications. Explore:
• Mobilising others around what truly matters

development of the industry, among other things, and works with
the broadcast media on a set of codes and standards. As an

“Value your knowledge and experience. Never

so hard for in your career. Passion, integrity and
personal growth is your power. Embrace it!”
The ability to establish a culture across an organisation is an
essential ingredient in leadership effectiveness. The women
we see at the top of media organisations and communications
departments are often cultural leaders who have used their
leadership skills to influence change and create cultural norms
within their workplaces. A strong culture and passion for women’s
leadership representation are core elements of MCN, and Libby
has played a central role in engraining its values into all day-
to-day workings. As National Director, and with a company
composition that is 70 per cent female, Libby will discuss:
• Leading, inspiring and building a team
• Embedding an organisational culture and injecting core values
into all platforms and communication channels
• Using your leadership to enhance women’s leadership progression

path just because it is expected of you. Seek
counsel from those whose advice you value,
but ultimately, listen to your gut and pave your

Effective leaders aren’t afraid to take risks. From an
established legal career, Fiona seized the opportunity to
take on a new challenge in the media industry with BBC
Worldwide Australia & New Zealand, where she quickly
progressed to a senior position within the company’s
executive team. Soaring to such a respected position
requires an open-mindedness to new skills and knowledge,
and learning from unexpected turns along the way. In
this session, Fiona will reflect on her leadership journey to
explore key learnings for women in today’s industry. Discuss:

“No matter where in the media field you work,
never underestimate the power of building
relationships”
Underpinning the success of any senior leader in
marketing, journalism, public relations, communications
or advertising, is the ability to build strong, long-term
relationships. The women who hold Executive positions
in the media and communications field have spent years
honing their relationship building skills, and have mastered
their approach to managing connections both internally
with staff, and externally with stakeholders and media
counterparts. With more than 25 years at the top of
Australian marketing and advertising, Penny will discuss
how women can ‘get back to basics’ and cultivate positive
relationships in today’s media environment. Explore:

• Understanding the importance of relationships to an
organisation and career progression
• Successful communication methods for creating new

and encourage women, in all media and communication
professions, to be deciders of their own careers in leadership,
and achieve personal and professional success. Explore:

“Having it all - Those three words have become
the greatest trap ever set for women”
Of the 195 independent countries in the world only 17 are
led by women, and in the United States, UK and Australia
women hold worryingly few top level executive positions.
Dena learned quite quickly the importance of being agile and
innovative so she could grasp each and every opportunity
that came her way, which led her to a career in New York,
Nepal, India, Chicago and Australia. It is Dena’s belief that
women are often the biggest barriers to themselves, and can
launch their own careers as little or as far as they choose.
Explore fundamental leadership expertise and capacities:
• Essential skills for a woman in business and fostering
women’s support for one another
• The will to lead – Harnessing the confidence to take every
opportunity
• Creative leadership – Necessary skills for setting yourself

“Things change, and fast, but that’s just
the nature of the role. Resilience and open-
mindedness will see you through”
Knowing how to effectively bounce back from reform
and lead your organisation or team through a period of
readjustment and uncertainty is an invaluable skill to have
as a leader in the public and private sectors. Learning to
use reform to your advantage will open up new possibilities
and potentially lead to even better outcomes, and the
most accomplished leaders are those who have developed
their ability to turn setbacks into comebacks. Drawing
on her experience in the public sector and the broader
communications field, Sarah will explore:
• Methods for leading through significant change
• Developing a strategy to accurately reflect and respond
to reforms
• Examples of successful management techniques during
turbulent times

Applying Behavioural Economics to Your Leadership Strategy to Measure Why People Think, Feel and Behave the Way
They Do
If you want staff, communities, stakeholders, or industry counterparts to think, feel or behave differently tomorrow than they did yesterday, what is it you can
do, say or engage in that will achieve that result? Aspiring and existing female leaders working in the communications and media field can advance their
leadership capacity and build on their existing communications skills by incorporating Behavioural Economics (BE) into their practice.
The theory of BE is the foundation for understanding how human decision making occurs, and it is essential that the leaders of today’s media industry
recognise the thinking behind not only others’ decision-making processes, but their own. If you can understand what shapes and drives behaviour, then
as leaders you have a better chance at creating change and making successful strategic decisions for your organisation. This workshop will give mid
to senior-level managers and leaders practical knowledge and skills that will aid their understanding of their unique media roles, and equip them with a
leader’s attitude toward every situation.
Session One: The Core Elements Required for a Successful Communication Strategy
• Knowing the key drivers to behaviour change; Capability, Opportunity and Self Identity
• Communication strategies for changing the status quo in your organisation and community
• Ways of identifying what behaviour you want to change, and harnessing the opportunity to do so
Session Two: Leveraging Behavioural Economics to Develop Yourself as a Leader
• Methods for successfully affecting behaviour change
• Implementing small practices as leaders to affect wider organisational change
• Rational decision-making - Understanding the motivators and reason behind your decisions, before you make them
Session Three: Engaging and Consulting With Complex or Sensitive Stakeholders and Communities
• Tried and tested methods and models of communication and innovative techniques
• Using BE techniques to mitigate difficult situations and address conflict
Session Four: Analysing Human Behaviour Now for Future Benefit
• Ways media and communications professionals can apply decision science in their roles
• The significant effects of BE on business and government thinking
• How female leaders can implement BE to advance their role, their personal and professional development, and consequently the future success of their
organisation

ABOUT THE EVENT
The media and communications industry holds considerable power and influence in shaping the way society thinks, feels and makes decisions. The
strategic decisions made by senior Managers and Executives in journalism, government relations, public relations, advertising, marketing and corporate
communications carry enormous weight and affect the actions of a number of organisations and people. While there has been improvement in female
representation in senior roles in recent years, there is still some way to go before gender diversity is achieved across the board. Without diversity at a
senior level the messages, ideals and norms which flow from decision-makers will not be reflective of the diverse Australian population.
The 3rd Women in Media and Communications Leadership Summit 2015 will continue its tradition of tackling the unique challenges that women
in media and communications face and provide proven and practical strategies to overcome them for enhanced career and leadership success.
Inspirational women from a variety of media and communications organisations and sectors will share their stories and provide critical advice for current
and emerging female leaders for increased professional proficiency and potential.

Having read across many major news bulletins and featured on a number of other Ten programs, Natarsha has experienced the full force of the media industry and what it means to be a prominent female figure within it. Drawing on raising a family while managing her leadership profile under the watchful public eye, Natarsha will explore: • Overcoming constant challenges and triumphing in the small wins • How the industry has evolved in its treatment of women since entering the media • Advice to aspiring female leaders coming through the ranks Natarsha Belling Presenter Network Ten 9.45 - 10.00 Questions and Discussion 10.00 - 10.45 CASE STUDY “The Australian Media Outlook 2015-19: It is important to be innovative and have a go” The past few years have seen unprecedented, widespread change that has turned much of the media industry and traditional communication roles upside-down. Increased mergers, downsizing, emerging disruptive technologies and the constantly moving ‘Twittersphere’ has made it increasingly difficult for managers and executives to navigate their organisations through this unfamiliar territory, and predict what is around the corner. Forecasting the media landscape is Megan’s domain, leading the PwC flagship research report into the outlook of Australian media and entertainment. In this session, Megan will discuss how she progressed to an executive role and overcame the challenges of change: • Strategies for advancing into core, strategic roles within your organisation • Methods for managing change and leading through uncertainty • What does the future hold for media? Megan Brownlow Executive Director and Editor, Australian Entertainment and Media Outlook PricewaterhouseCoopers 10.45 - 11.00 Questions and Discussion 11.00 - 11.15 Morning Tea 11.15 - 12.00 EXPERT COMMENTARY “Take your talent by the horns and go for it. Don’t be afraid of new technology and use your intuition” When the internet became readily available almost 20 years ago it changed the course of media (and many lives) forever. Media professionals on all levels have experienced the shift to digital. Some have adapted well, others are still on the learning curve. With decades in news media under her belt, Helen has mastered new media. She played a pivotal part in transforming the ABC News Online website from a mainly word-based site, to one that incorporates video, images and audio. As an experienced journalism, broadcast and social media trainer, internationally and locally, Helen will deliver practical skills on: • Why knowledge of new media carries so much weight in today’s industry and how leaders can use it to their career benefit • Be a social media-savvy leader – How to successfully, and ethically, engage in digital communications • Where the industry has got digital right, and where it needs some improvement Helen Tzarimas Senior Journalist and Presenter Australian Broadcasting Corporation 12.00 - 12.15 Questions and Discussion 12.15 - 1.15 Networking Lunch 1.15 - 2.15 INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION Leading with confidence – Rise to industry challenges While we are seeing improvement and progress in female representation generally, the traditionally male-dominated media industry continues its gender imbalance in senior executive roles. This, together with the rise of new media and concerns around digital disruption, has made career progression an increasingly difficult task. Women in media and communications roles can enhance their leadership presence and career advancement by cultivating a sense of self-assurance and believing in their own capacity to overcome challenges of today’s media environment. Panellists will discuss their journey to leadership success and how they overcame any odds, uncertainties and setbacks along the way. Explore: • Methods for leading with resilience • How to confidently back yourself • Techniques for overcoming unexpected obstacles Emily Wilson Editor-in-Chief The Guardian Australia Merita Tabain Director, Media and Corporate Communications Department Victoria Police Caoimhe Buckley Vice President Employee Engagement and Communications, Corporate Affairs BHP Billiton Bernadette Murdoch Head of Communications, Australasia GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Judith Whelan News Director The Sydney Morning Herald Rachel Jepson Head of Internal Communications Vodafone 2.15 - 3.00 CASE STUDY “Its more of a work / life juggle than a work / life balance. Some weeks you’ll nail it more than others” As a senior female in the demanding media and communications field, achieving a vibrant and rewarding career can come at a cost to work / life balance. Finding time to enjoy motherhood, achieve personal goals, and put in the expected hours to be considered for a senior role, are common challenges for executive women. Having taken time off to raise a family, and hitting the pause button on a leadership position in an ever-changing communications space, Tracy will explore how female leaders can achieve a professional and personal balance. Discuss: • Having it all – Ruthless prioritisation and smart time management • Negotiation skills – Tricks and tips to make it work for you • Working out what you want – Be honest with yourself and your employer Tracy Hall Head of Brand and Communications eBay Australia VALUE PLUS DISCOUNT Receive $300 off registration if you register and pay by 3 June 2015 2015 Theme: ‘Advice to my younger self’ What do you know now that you wish you had known then? The 3rd Women in Media and Communications Leadership Summit 2015 will see some of Australia’s most senior women in media and communications reflect on their career journeys and offer key advice to aspiring leaders. They will provide proven strategies for leadership development, and equip women with the tools to overcome challenges hindering their personal and professional progression.

Successful leaders are able to cut through any ‘noise’ and connect employees and stakeholders to the important issues at hand. This proficiency is especially crucial to lead in today’s evolving communications arena. Rita will discuss how she has managed a career in communications that has spanned more than 20 years, using it to discuss what strategies women can engage to move from junior roles, to a leading position with responsibility for their organisation’s communications. Explore: • Mobilising others around what truly matters • Recognising and managing shifting priorities during times of change • Communication and engagement methods for successfully delivering social and digital initiatives Rita Zonius Head of Internal Digital Communications, ANZ ANZ 4.00 - 4.15 Questions and Discussion 4.15 - 4.45 CASE STUDY “Every woman in public life needs to develop skin as tough as rhinoceros hide” - Eleanor Roosevelt The Australian Government’s statutory authority for broadcast media and communications, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), is responsible for the regulatory development of the industry, among other things, and works with the broadcast media on a set of codes and standards. As an ACMA spokesperson and media executive, and with decades in front of and behind the camera, Emma has been exposed to all sides of the industry. Emma will discuss her perspective on: • Thought leadership on women in communications • Leadership in a public role and female representation • Using your leadership to affect the future of women in media and communications Emma Rossi Media and Communications Executive Australian Communications and Media Authority 4.45 - 5.15 EXPERT COMMENTARY “Value your knowledge and experience. Never apologise or undervalue what you have worked so hard for in your career. Passion, integrity and personal growth is your power. Embrace it!” The ability to establish a culture across an organisation is an essential ingredient in leadership effectiveness. The women we see at the top of media organisations and communications departments are often cultural leaders who have used their leadership skills to influence change and create cultural norms within their workplaces. A strong culture and passion for women’s leadership representation are core elements of MCN, and Libby has played a central role in engraining its values into all day- to-day workings. As National Director, and with a company composition that is 70 per cent female, Libby will discuss: • Leading, inspiring and building a team • Embedding an organisational culture and injecting core values into all platforms and communication channels • Using your leadership to enhance women’s leadership progression Elizabeth Minogue National Director, Multiply Integration and Content Partnerships Multi Channel Network (MCN) 5.15 - 5.30 Questions and Discussion 5.30 Concluding Remarks from the Chair 5.30 - 6.30 Networking Reception Day Two 16 September 2015 8.30 - 8.55 Morning Coffee 8.55 - 9.00 Opening Remarks from the Chair 9.00 - 9.45 OPENING KEYNOTE CASE STUDY “Don’t feel pressure to follow a set career path just because it is expected of you. Seek counsel from those whose advice you value, but ultimately, listen to your gut and pave your own path in what works best for you and what matters most to you” Effective leaders aren’t afraid to take risks. From an established legal career, Fiona seized the opportunity to take on a new challenge in the media industry with BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand, where she quickly progressed to a senior position within the company’s executive team. Soaring to such a respected position requires an open-mindedness to new skills and knowledge, and learning from unexpected turns along the way. In this session, Fiona will reflect on her leadership journey to explore key learnings for women in today’s industry. Discuss: • Lessons learned and advice to remember • Building your leadership profile in the current state of the media industry • Getting a seat at the table – Strategies for furthering your career in the media industry Fiona Lang Chief Operating Officer BBC Worldwide 9.45 - 10.00 Questions and Discussion 10.00 - 10.45 EXPERT COMMENTARY “No matter where in the media field you work, never underestimate the power of building relationships” Underpinning the success of any senior leader in marketing, journalism, public relations, communications or advertising, is the ability to build strong, long-term relationships. The women who hold Executive positions in the media and communications field have spent years honing their relationship building skills, and have mastered their approach to managing connections both internally with staff, and externally with stakeholders and media counterparts. With more than 25 years at the top of Australian marketing and advertising, Penny will discuss how women can ‘get back to basics’ and cultivate positive relationships in today’s media environment. Explore: • Strategies for developing emotional connections • Understanding the importance of relationships to an organisation and career progression • Successful communication methods for creating new associations Penny Burke Director Essence Comms 10.45 - 11.00 Questions and Discussion 11.00 - 11.15 Morning Tea 11.15 - 12.00 CASE STUDY “The industry is constantly changing but if you work hard and keep an open-mindedness to new challenges, you can expect greatness” Shelly’s leadership path has taken her from a traditional journalism degree to positions with ABC TV and radio, Channel Nine, The Sun Herald, and Channel Seven. Dena learned quite quickly the importance of being agile and innovative so she could grasp each and every opportunity that came her way, which led her to a career in New York, Nepal, India, Chicago and Australia. It is Dena’s belief that women are often the biggest barriers to themselves, and can launch their own careers as little or as far as they choose. Explore fundamental leadership expertise and capacities: • Essential skills for a woman in business and fostering women’s support for one another • The will to lead – Harnessing the confidence to take every opportunity • Creative leadership – Necessary skills for setting yourself up as an innovator and establishing a creative environment Dena Vassallo Director of Business Development and Innovation Professional Public Relations (PPR) 2.00 - 2.15 Questions and Discussion 2.15 - 2.50 CASE STUDY “Things change, and fast, but that’s just the nature of the role. Resilience and open- mindedness will see you through” Knowing how to effectively bounce back from reform and lead your organisation or team through a period of readjustment and uncertainty is an invaluable skill to have as a leader in the public and private sectors. Learning to use reform to your advantage will open up new possibilities and potentially lead to even better outcomes, and the most accomplished leaders are those who have developed their ability to turn setbacks into comebacks. Drawing on her experience in the public sector and the broader communications field, Sarah will explore: • Methods for leading through significant change • Developing a strategy to accurately reflect and respond to reforms • Examples of successful management techniques during turbulent times Dr Sarah Vandermark Director, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
  • 6. 9.00 - 4.30 Applying Behavioural Economics to Your Leadership Strategy to Measure Why People Think, Feel and Behave the Way They Do If you want staff, communities, stakeholders, or industry counterparts to think, feel or behave differently tomorrow than they did yesterday, what is it you can do, say or engage in that will achieve that result? Aspiring and existing female leaders working in the communications and media field can advance their leadership capacity and build on their existing communications skills by incorporating Behavioural Economics (BE) into their practice. The theory of BE is the foundation for understanding how human decision making occurs, and it is essential that the leaders of today’s media industry recognise the thinking behind not only others’ decision-making processes, but their own. If you can understand what shapes and drives behaviour, then as leaders you have a better chance at creating change and making successful strategic decisions for your organisation. This workshop will give mid to senior-level managers and leaders practical knowledge and skills that will aid their understanding of their unique media roles, and equip them with a leader’s attitude toward every situation. Session One: The Core Elements Required for a Successful Communication Strategy • Knowing the key drivers to behaviour change; Capability, Opportunity and Self Identity • Communication strategies for changing the status quo in your organisation and community • Ways of identifying what behaviour you want to change, and harnessing the opportunity to do so Session Two: Leveraging Behavioural Economics to Develop Yourself as a Leader • Methods for successfully affecting behaviour change • Implementing small practices as leaders to affect wider organisational change • Rational decision-making - Understanding the motivators and reason behind your decisions, before you make them Session Three: Engaging and Consulting With Complex or Sensitive Stakeholders and Communities • Tried and tested methods and models of communication and innovative techniques • Using BE techniques to mitigate difficult situations and address conflict Session Four: Analysing Human Behaviour Now for Future Benefit • Ways media and communications professionals can apply decision science in their roles • The significant effects of BE on business and government thinking • How female leaders can implement BE to advance their role, their personal and professional development, and consequently the future success of their organisation Expert Facilitator: Penny Burke Director Essence Comms Penny Burke is an award winning marketer, facilitator and author of ‘Forced Focus - The essence of attracting and retaining the best people. The strategic decisions made by senior Managers and Executives in journalism, government relations, public relations, advertising, marketing and corporate communications carry enormous weight and affect the actions of a number of organisations and people. While there has been improvement in female representation in senior roles in recent years, there is still some way to go before gender diversity is achieved across the board. Without diversity at a senior level the messages, ideals and norms which flow from decision-makers will not be reflective of the diverse Australian population. The 3rd Women in Media and Communications Leadership Summit 2015 will continue its tradition of tackling the unique challenges that women in media and communications face and provide proven and practical strategies to overcome them for enhanced career and leadership success. Inspirational women from a variety of media and communications organisations and sectors will share their stories and provide critical advice for current and emerging female leaders for increased professional proficiency and potential.
