Which Gear Do You Default to under Stress?
• 5th Gear: Nothing else matters until the work is done!
• 4th Gear: Physically present but emotionally absent!
• 3rd Gear: I party hard with my friends, I’m in denial!
• 2nd Gear: At least my family and close friends love me!
• 1st Gear: Leave me alone, I don’t want to talk about it!
5th Gear: Full Work Mode
• It is brilliant for getting something specific done but sometimes can
make you miss the opportunities.
• In fifth gear, you effortlessly run at your most productive speed. Your
passion and competence at something allows you to get lots done with
less effort once you transition into high gear.
• However, it can cause conflict if you have to communicate with
others.
• Too much focus can cause you to miss opportunities at which
you might otherwise jump.
5th Gear: Full Work Mode (Cont.)
• So how can you make specific job done or use fifth gear correctly?
• Schedule specific time for fifth gear and let people know they will
have to wait.
• This will help you to get your projects done without sacrificing
focus and being too distracted to help other people.
4th Gear: Task Mode
• Fourth gear is the most commonly used for day-to-day action, but
people tend to overdo it and risk burning out.
• 85 percent of leaders say that they are most commonly in fourth gear.
• This is the most productive gear, jumping around between multiple
tasks and dealing with many events in the course of a day.
• There is a bad side to this. The more you try to do in fourth gear, the
longer your to do list gets, and less you seem to be able to step outside
of it.
4th Gear: Task Mode (Cont.)
• To avoid Task Addiction:
• Do something inspirational in the morning
• Be proactive, not reactive. Do not let someone else define your day in an email
or phone call.
• Discipline yourself which will help you remain presented and connecting with
those around you.
• Teach your family about different gears and smooth shifting among them.
Do not let work dominate your life.
3rd Gear: Social Mode
Third gear is important for building relationships, but many find it
difficult to entertain other people’s interests
• Are you the sort of person who enjoys coffee-shop meetups or dinner
parties with your friends? Then you’re the sort of person who enjoys
third gear, which is all about informal socializing with others.
• But there’s more to third gear than having fun; it’s great for getting to
know people and forging relationships, both personal and professional.
• A little bit of curiosity in other people’s interest can bring you
opportunities and increase your influence.
3rd Gear: Social Mode (Cont.)
• You can create new opportunities in third gear by being genuinely
curious about other people’s interests and giving them your full
attention, since you never know where it might lead.
• Just remember not to spend your whole life socializing in third gear-
you wouldn’t get anything done or have time to relax and develop real
relationships as you would when you shift down to second gear.

2nd Gear: Connect Mode
Second gear is for cementing real relationship but all too often ignored
and forced at inappropriate times.
• Real relationship may include partner, family member, and some close
friends.
• Being present with one of them and building deep relationship will
give you personal growth, inspiration and peace of mind.
• Spending time with them is very important to be present in day-day
activities.
Connecting
well
1st Gear: Recharge Mode
First gear is the most important gear among all, but many have no time
for it.
• A car can not be operated (Starting or Stopping) ignoring first gear.
• Your quality of life depends on how much you care yourself.
• Do you spend some times with yourself ? Ask yourself before you
want a productive and happy life.
• Recharging yourself depends on individual choice; one may take a
yoga class other may take a walk in a quite place.
• Think about you, your potential and capitalize it.
Reverse Gear: Responsive Mode
Backing up or apologizing when necessary. It is the most powerful gear.
• It is used when we need to back up and start again or apologize.
• There are two types of people—responsive and resistant. You hire
responsive ones and fire the resistant.
• Responsive people are self-aware and have a consciousness that is not
steeped in victim mentality, but rather in responsibility. They understand
that they are responsible for their actions and will make amends when they
have clearly overstepped their bounds.
• Humble leaders are responsive and therefore have more time to be present
with others as they are more focused on serving others than on being served.
