electricity theft in INDIA has a significant effect on the indian
economy, as this figure is considerably high.
• Out of the whole power generated
Technical losses CONSTITUTE 4-5%
commercial losses constitute 8%
but practically total losses constitute around 40%
• Thus thefts lead to increase price of an unit of energy by
distribution companies to maintain overall profits.

The latest prepayment meters use keypad
technology, which have a telephone like keypad on
the meter for recharging the meter or for accessing
information on consumption.
• All prepaid meters have an internal antenna to
communicate electricity consumption data via
telecommunications network received by a collector
mounted on a pole near by.
THE PREPAYMENT METERING
SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED IN THE
DIAGRAM BELOW.
• Electricity can be purchased like a commodity.
• Customer bills will be based on actual meter readings
• The consumption is displayed in terms of energy KWH
and money(rs.) Both.
• The information of energy usage in terms of money is
a powerful tool to budget and control the electricity
consumption.
• End to estimated bills

• Helps consumer to contribute towards energy
conservation
• Reduction in price .

• No wastage of time for bill payment.
• No billing disputes
• Historical data monitoring
 Bad debt levels should fall as billing disputes reduce
 Demand forecasting will be based on more acccurate

and collection of payments can be eliminated by
prepayment metering
 Dynamic pricing(deciding tarrif before few minutes)
 Can raise huge capitals when needed by introducing

• Prepayment metering is slowly and gradually gaining a
foothold in the indian power sector.
• The maharashtra state slectricity distribution company ltd
(msedcl) launched first prepaid electricity meter in india
• New delhi power ltd (NDPL), JUSCO, west bengal state
electricity distribution co. Ltd(wbsedcl), himachal pradesh
state electricity board (HPSEB), BESCOM, gujarat,
rajasthan,uhbvn etc have all joined the prepayment
bandwagon.
• Ndpl was the first private utility to introduce the system for
domestic consumers whereas wbsedcl was the first state
electricity board to have gone for prepayment.
At present many other utilities like BRPL, BYPL,
BESCOM, CESC, HPSEB, Assam Distribution
Company, etc are using the prepayment metering
system.
The Delhi State Regulator (DERC) also came forward
in support of prepaid meters and announced a 2%
rebate on the tariff for pre-paid consumers.
• Looking at the benefits the system provides, there is a
need to give it a policy support and implement it on a
large scale all across. A simplified tariff structure will
make life much easier for the utilities, the supplier and
the consumer .
