3. In the beginning . . .
After the completion of the Transcontinental
Railroad, the Chinese migrated to the Midwest.
The “Anti-Chinese” attitude pushed the Chinese
away from the West Coast.
By 1890, Chicago was home to roughly 550 Chinese
because of their acceptance.
They established shops, restaurants, laundromats,
and homes around Van Buren and Clark Street.
4. More History
Prejudice and discrimination arose in Chicago.
Chinatown was pushed further South from Van
Buren and Clark to Cermak and Wentworth.
H.O. Stone Company aided this establishment.
The Chinese community put on projects like road
extensions and participation in the Worlds Fair in
1933.
Chinatown has continued to grow and expand.
