- Surveys of USW show our membership is just as concerned about the environment as most Canadians. We have been active in communities on environment issues since the 1950s. We have forged relationships to address pollution, toxic chemicals, and irresponsible employers.
- The USW and Environmental Defence agree to create a strategic alliance to enable them to work together as advocates for working people and for the environment in key areas of global trade, the use of toxic substances in commercial activity, the creation of ‘green manufacturing’ jobs, and the development and implementation of strategies to address climate change and protect sustainable resources. Key areas: Address unregulated chemicals. Reform Toxic Chemical Policy Support municipal green manufacturing initiatives. Working collaboratively on climate change and green jobs. What is a strategic alliance? On the things we agree on, we plan to take specific actions working together to advance our common interests. On those issues that we differ, we recognize and respect our differences. Why join together? We did the math. Separate our support is weaker and we complement each others strengths.
- Six Principles A cap on emissions should be imposed based on what science says is needed to protect our environment; The cap should cover as many emitting activities as possible, and close any loopholes; The system should promote the creation and retention of good green Canadian jobs; The system should reduce global emissions rather than shift carbon-emitting industries to countries with weaker standards; Canada has a unique responsibility to regulate pollution from the oil sands; and The program should direct cap and trade revenues and allowances domestically to public benefit. Revenues should also be directed internationally to help support clean economic development in emerging economies.
