In a monolithic application, different services are developed within same project side by side. In these kind of applications you don't need to worry about breaking the compatibility between contract interfaces since there is an invisible verifier called compiler that checks that all method calls follows the defined signature. But in case of microservices, different services are deployed in different runtimes and using different separated networks. In this scenario, any change on the contract of one service cannot be caught by the compiler since there is no typesafe connection between services.. Now breaking the compatibility between services can be really easy and hard to detect (maybe until your new version of the service is on production). In this talk we are going to explore why deploying a new version of a service might break everything in microservices architecture, and how to fix with consumer-driven contracts pattern.

Presentation Overview: Since Puppet grew up in the *nix world, there is a common misconception that it can't be used to effectively manage Windows. This talk hopes to dispel confusion on the matter and demonstrate that Windows can be managed effectively and easily with Puppet. Along with basic how-tos and tips on working with Windows systems using Puppet, Windows specific issues and caveats will be discussed with effective mitigations. Speaker Bio: James is a recovering sysadmin currently working as a Professional Services Engineer at Puppet Labs. He performs training and advises on configuration and systems management best practices in his day job. Does Behaviour Driven Development have a role in the infrastructure world? Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure where systems administrators can apply some simple open source tools and BDD principles to make infrastructure management more powerful, more insightful and deliver more value to their customers. The typical enterprise monitoring and configuration management set-up for a website is: - Is the Apache package installed and the appropriate version? - Is the Apache service running? - Can I connect to the HTTP port and is HTML returned? - Multiply this by a few hundred iterations of hosts and types of services and you’re probably looking at your typical Nagios, Puppet, Cfengine, Hyperic set-up. All this monitoring misses something critical though – we’re not actually monitoring that the service does what it should. Yes, it matters whether Apache is installed, the Apache service is running, and you can connect to HTTP but does this actually prove anything about the availability of the service we’re managing and providing for our customers? Nope… We need to demonstrate more than just a check that says the Apache server is up. We need to demonstrate that the service delivered by that infrastructure was available to our customers AND functioning as intended. Enter Behaviour Driven Infrastructure or BDI which applies the principles of Behavioural Driven Development to the management of infrastructure. In this presentation you’ll learn: - How Behaviour Driven Development works - What makes a behavioural test - How to install and use Cucumber to perform BDI - Practical examples of behavioural tests in Cucumber, and - How to integrate BDI into your work flow and your enterprise monitoring and configuration management frameworks.

Atlassian's Build Engineering team is responsible for the build infrastructure that hundreds of developers rely on to perform thousands of builds that upload hundreds of thousands build artifacts a day. The services behind this infrastructure, including Bamboo and Nexus, are provisioned and configured using Puppet. To manage the configuration of Bamboo and Nexus more effectively and with less disruption, the Build Engineering team has created its own custom Puppet types and providers to manage these applications through their REST APIs. Since publishing, these modules have been downloaded tens of thousands of times and received contributions from the community. Just like a tugboat brings containers safely to port, “Tugbot” will do the same for running quality Docker containers in production . Tugbot makes Continuous Testing REAL. Any kind of test (including performance, chaos, and security) can be run with 5 lines in a “Test Container” Dockerfile. Leveraging the Docker LABEL and Docker Remote API, we will show how this simplifies testing for services running in docker containers while standardizing results collected for analytics to continuously improve the quality of software. We believe that this will be the first step in “social testing” for containers like github has done for social coding.

Scaling Up Lookout was originally presented at Lookout's Scaling for Mobile event on July 25, 2013. R. Tyler Croy is a Senior Software Engineer at Lookout, Inc. Lookout has grown immensely in the last year. We've doubled the size of the company—added more than 80 engineers to the team, support 45+ million users, have over 1000 machines in production, see over 125,000 QPS and more than 2.6 billion requests/month. Our analysts use Hadoop, Hive, and MySQL to interactively manipulate multibillion row tables. With that, there are bound to be some growing pains and lessons learned.

When we are working on tests exercising large parts of our software system (e.g. in an acceptance test suite), we often have to set up a considerable amount of data to set the stage for the scenario under test. This might include several calls to cumbersome APIs. At first, such code can be hard do get right. When it is working properly, many times the intention of the setup is greatly hidden in a convoluted mess of code. Therefore, such code can pose a major hurdle for the evolution of the project. Although intensive refactoring can provide benefits, there are things demanding even better readability. At this point, techniques, patterns and tools like Specflow can provide advantages. In this talk we discuss typical problems faced with the setup of test data and means to address those. We illustrate three cases where non-trivial setup was needed. After understanding the challenges faced we will present and discuss the final solutions. All topics are supported by code examples from a 10+ year project that has faced all of those issues.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
