NY. Rao Chalasani supports charitable
efforts far from the city in which he built his
career, including those of Doctors Without
Borders. The organization, which provides
emergency medical help wherever it
determines the need for it is greatest, has
plunged into caring for people afflicted by
the Ebola virus in West Africa.

3.  The story of the 1,000th Ebola patient of
Doctors Without Borders is a dramatic one.
The boy’s father worked as a health-promotion
officer for the organization but
was unable to convince his family of the
seriousness of the epidemic. He lost first his
wife, then his brother, then his daughters,
until only his son was left. When his son
began showing symptoms, the worker took
him to a Doctors Without Borders facility,
where it was confirmed that he had Ebola.

4.  Distraught, the worker could only watch
from afar as his son fought the disease
with the help of the charity’s doctors. The
son grew stronger and stronger, until he
walked out of the treatment center to
embrace his father, free of the virus. The
struggle goes on, but where there is
treatment, there is hope as well.
