SAP HANA Infrastructure Evolution
A Continuous Journey Towards Openness …
Four years ago, SAP embarked on a HANA journey using the appliance delivery model
– SAP HANA Appliance: Pre-engineered in-memory appliance that combines pre-installed HANA software components with pre-configured,
SAP-certified hardware delivered by SAP’s leading partners
In 2013, SAP introduced HANA tailored data center integration delivery model (SAP HANA TDI)
– SAP HANA TDI: An alternative delivery model providing more choice to customers by allowing them to leverage their
existing hardware components and operational processes to build their own HANA deployment infrastructure

SAP HANA TDI Phase 4 – Introduction to HANA on IBM Power Systems
Compute server requirements
Customers can chose to run SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems 8 (in production) or on Power Systems 7+ (in non-production).
SAP supports hardware setups which comply with the prerequisites below; no additional approval(s) by SAP needed.
Compute server requirements
The following IBM Power 8 System configurations are supported for HANA compute server nodes in
production use cases:
1. IBM POWER8 S824 server; max 24 cores, 768GB HANA size (32GB/core)
o 2 socket, 12 cores each (total 24 cores); 3.5 MGHz clock frequency; scale-out chip set; SMT8 configuration supported
(requires special SLES 11 SP3 patch)
o Max 768 SAP HANA system size (24 cores * 32GB = 768 GB)
o LPAR support via dedicated donating, aka DLPARS, LPARS
o The system can be partitioned in numerous ways (e.g. 1 LPAR with HANA 768GB instance, or 2 LPARs, each with 384GB
HANA instance, or 1 LPAR with 256GB and 1 LPAR with HANA 384 GB instance, etc.)
2. IBM POWER8 E870/E880 server (max 64 cores, 2TB HANA size (32GB/core); 1 or 2 node configs:
o 1 node configuration has up to 4s, 10/12 cores each (total 40/48 cores) and can support up to at least 1TB HANA system
size; SMT 8 configuration supported (requires special SLES 11 SP3 patch)
o 2 node configuration has 2 nodes * 4 socket * 10/12 cores (total 80/96 cores), and can support up to at least 2TB HANA
system size; SMT 8 configuration supported (requires special SLES 11 SP3 patch)
o LPAR support via dedicated donating, aka DLPARS LPARS.
o The system can be partitioned in numerous ways and users can leverage IBM Capacity on Demand (COD) to turn on/off
capacity as needed
IBM Power 7+ system configurations are supported only in non-production use cases

Enterprise storage requirements for SAP HANA on Power Systems
Use certified storage only
– Storages used for TDI setups must have successfully passed the SAP HANA hardware
certification for Enterprise Storage
– Certificate states that the storage fulfills SAP HANA’s requirements for data throughput and
latency times
– For an up-to-date list of supported storage vendors, see Cerified HANA Enterprise Storage site.
Enterprise networking requirements for SAP HANA on Power Systems
Follow the best practices and network recommendations described in the the SAP HANA
Network Requirements white paper
Software installation requirements for SAP HANA on Power Systems
Let only certified person(s) do the SAP HANA software installation
Restrictions
IBM Power 7+ systems are supported only in non-production (for test and development systems)
SUSE Linux is supported only (requires special SLES 11 SP3 patch)
Use case is limited to BWoH single node, scale up scenarios , with max 2TB HANA system size
IBM GPFS is not supported
