As part of a course at SPJIMR, I made a visual diary describing the story of 2 Koreas.
This presentation will take you through history through visuals.
2. The Story of 2 Koreas
• Korean peninsula was under
the Japanese ruler for a long
time.
• Japan pursued their economic
interests and had military
stationed in Korea.
• The occupation came to a
standstill when Japan
surrendered after World War II
Japanese Occupation
The 38th Peninsula
• After the World War II, US and
USSR set up a Joint Commission
to decide the future for Korea
• All efforts at unification of the
peninsula failed.
• The two powers agreed to
divide the two on the 38th
parallel, dividing it into two
areas of equal sizes.
• The UN voted for free elections
in the two states but this
resolution was vetoed by the
USSR.
• Hence, elections were held
only in South, which came to
be known as Republic of Korea
• Kim Il Sung took charge in what
came to be known as DPRK.
Elections
The Korean War
• In 1950, with support from
China & USSR, Kim Il Sung
invaded South.
• South Korea was pushed to the
bottom but the US and the UN
interfered.
• The unification effort failed,
war ended with armistice in
the year 1953.
• South Korea became an
economic powerhouse with
support from USA
• North Korea, on the other
hand, was isolated on the
global front and invested more
on defense, rather than
education and economy.
• DPRK is still a poor state.
Economic Development
Situation Now
• Kim Jong-un has successfully
tested nuclear missiles.
• Efforts for peace from USA &
South Korea have been in vain.
• President Trump met DPRK
leader in Singapore in 2017 but
no follow up action was taken
• DPRK continues to exploit its
civilians.
