3. What is society:
A group of people who share a common
culture, occupy a particular territorial area, and
feel themselves to constitute a unified and
distinct entity.
Characteristics:
• Society consists of people
• It ensures mutual interaction and awareness
• It depends on likeness as well as differences
• Division of labour and cooperation are essential
• Society is dynamic
• It has its own control system
• It has its own culture

August Comte, a French philosopher , 1837 coined
the word.
Application of Scientific method in the study of the
relationship between society and the individual.
Sociology explains , studies, analyses the mutual
interaction/relationships between the individuals
and the society,

society; different types of social influences fall
upon them.
Both the humans and the society react upon
each other and have mutual interactions.
These interactions are important topic of study
in the domain of Education
The social significance of Education is studied
by Educational sociology.
Education and Sociology- both are related to
the society, the social activity and the welfare
of the society.
They are interrelated and Interdependent

Educational sociology is a branch of sociology
which studies the issues related to the
relationship between society and education.
It is the application of sociological principles and
methods to the solution of problems in an
educational system
It analyses the institutions and organizations of
Education and studies the functional relationship
between education, on one hand and other
components of the society like the economy,
polity, religion and kinship, on the other hand.

SOCIOLOGY
It evolved as a discipline to prepare
educators for their future tasks.
It uses the results of sociological
researches in planning educational
activities and in developing effective
methods of realizing these plans.
The main function of educational sociology
is to analyse the influence of the
educational institutions on the development
of social personality of the students.
8. SCOPE OF EDUCATIONAL SOCIOLOGY:
It is concerned with general concepts like------
society itself, culture, community, class,
environment, socialization, internalization,
accommodation, assimilation, cultural lag, sub-
culture, status, role and etc…
It is further studied education and social class,
state, social force, cultural change, various
problems of role structure, role analysis in relation
to the total social system and the micro society of
the school such as authority, selection, and the
organization of learning, streaming, curriculum and
so forth
9. It deals with analysis of educational
situations in various geographical and
ethnological contexts. Like—
Educational situations in rural, urban and
tribal areas, in different parts of the
country/world, with the background of
different races, cultures etc.
It studies the effect of economy upon the
type of education provided to the students
like---education provided in SEBA, CBSC,
ICSE schools etc.

various social agencies like family, school,
peers on the students.
