Experience with Teaching and Learning
 Worked in collaboration with the Dean of Medicine (Teaching and
Learning) in the School of Medicine, University of Wollongong, from 2012-
2015.
 Assessed new directions and methods for teaching and learning and
applied them to the medical education of postgraduate students.
 Recognized that learners would have different approaches to new
learning. Overall learning style of my students matched that of
Constructivism, particularly in case-based learning tutorials which I
facilitated.
 Encouraged peer-assisted learning
 Wrote and delivered medical education/medical science lectures on the
premise that students would come from different knowledge backgrounds.
 Pedagogy was a mixture of didactic instruction and problem-based
learning opportunities.
 Assessment of new learning was both formative (self-testing quizzes) and

Experience with Clinical Trial Co-ordination and Research
 Lead scientific research and co-ordination role in clinical trials of
Simvastatin in Australia, working with clinicians at St Vincent’s Hospital,
Melbourne and with Pfizer (Australia).
 Monitored the pharmacological effects of the Statin.
 Monitored any side effects, most notably muscle pain, weakness,
tenderness and cramping. Also monitored joint pain, gastrointestinal
symptoms, sleep disturbance and/or headache.
 Reported trial results to the pharmaceutical company (Pfizer) and to
clinicians.
 Wrote to participants at enrolment stage and at conclusion of the trial. Trial
(placebo-controlled, double-blind) involved over 300 participants across
the country. Our local participants numbered 28.
 Responsible for ethics applications for the trial.
 Managed the status of the study in the hospital environment.
 Managed hospital-based budgets for the trial.
 Ensured compliance with Australian laws and regulations pertaining to
placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical trials.

Achievement: Developed strong communication skills in this role and
understood the stringent requirements for human ethics applications,
concise scientific reporting to pharmaceutical companies, medical
reporting and communication with clinicians and trial participants.
Multimedia delivery
 Authored PowerPoint slide decks for the medical sciences lectures at
School of Medicine, Wollongong University.
 Devised voice-overs for the slide deck, for student private listening post-
lecture, via student-accessible databases.
Achievement: Students appreciate the post-lecture presentations as a
valuable supplement to their individual learning processes.
Lecturing to large (80-100 students) undergraduate groups from the
faculties of science, medicine and nursing
 Wrote and delivered lectures in biological, molecular biological and human
sciences.
 Subjects include human physiology, genetics, human structure and
function, biochemistry, and protein chemistry.
 Areas of further specialization include peptide chemistry, carbohydrate
metabolism, cellular biology, chemi-luminescence techniques for
identification of biological molecules, central pathways of subcellular
metabolism and practical applications of molecular biotechnology.
Achievement: Extensive lecturing experience in several subject areas
in the biological and medical sciences.
Facilitating small (8-10 students) tutorials in undergraduate medicine
 Foundation member of the Problem-Based Learning tutorial staff team at
Deakin University Medical School.
 Designed learning modules for physiological processes in human cells for
use in problem-based learning tutorials
 Inculcated skills in deeper learning for students and promoted techniques
for life-long learning.
Achievement: Students, all medical undergraduates, became deeper
learners and were able to approach problems that required thinking
from first principles. Encouraged abandonment of surface learning.
Students gained enormous confidence in thinking empirically about
basic medical and clinical problems. Students undertook private
research and could see their way beyond textbook learning.

Lecturing to (large, 80) postgraduate groups (medicine)
 Authored and delivered lectures in several medical sciences units. These
included Genomics of Colorectal Cancer, DNA the Molecule of
Inheritance, PCR in Medical Genetics (Cystic Fibrosis and Duchenne
Muscular Dystrophy), Growth Factor Signalling in Carcinogenesis, Gastro-
oesophageal Reflux, Disorders of the Airway, Excitation-Contraction
Coupling in Cardiac Function and Subcellular Metabolism.
 Developed live demonstrations of the application of PCR to the mutations
in Cystic Fibrosis and in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Achievement: Contribution of the scientific basis to clinical knowledge,
treatments and investigations is seen to be a valuable addition to
student knowledge by the University of Wollongong, Faculty of
Science, Medicine and Health.
Facilitating small medical tutorial groups, (8 students), postgraduates
 Facilitated Case-Based Learning tutorials for postgraduate medical
students, (mature adults) in the Graduate School of Medicine, University of
Wollongong.
 In addition to students holding first degrees in sciences and biomedicine,
students from the faculties of Engineering (Chemical), Law and Arts were
enrolled in my tutorial groups for postgraduate studies in medicine.
 Developed assessment techniques, both formative and summative.
 Contributed summative exam questions.
 Developed a system of quizzes and short answer questions to aid
students in their formative learning. The quizzes were incorporated into
learning modules on Moodle.
 Was personal tutor to 8 individual students, whom I also mentored.
Achievement: Brought a patient, personal and constructive approach
to learning and to the giving of constructive feedback. Helped students
to develop techniques for deep and life-long learning, including
application of private research and the use of databases for citations.
In particular, instructed students on the use of the ENDNOTE software.
Research (quantitative)
 Carried out research in molecular biology, lipoprotein and apo-protein
biochemistry, polymerase chain reaction in detection of point mutations
and deletions, protein chemistry and characterization, immuno-affinity
chromatography, electrophoresis of DNA and of polypeptides.
 Developed transgenic Lucerne plants in investigations of the natriuretic
peptide gene dosage effects in salinity and drought tolerance.

Achievement: Have more than 40 publications in internationally-
refereed scientific journals. Frequently presented quantitative research
findings at national (Atherosclerosis Society of Australia, Endocrine
Society of Australia and Nutrition Society of Australia) and international
(American Heart Association) conferences.
Research (qualitative)
 Designed a questionnaire to survey medical students’ opinions of Case-
based Learning, in the School of Medicine, University of Wollongong.
 Recorded interviews with students, then transcribed and coded the
resulting information and performed thematic analysis.
 Have used SPSS and NVivo software.
Achievement: Have presented this qualitative research work at
national conferences in Australia. Analysis of opinions has provided the
basis for continuous improvement in the way information is presented
and the techniques used in efficiently facilitating tutorials.
Interviewing of prospective (postgraduate) medical students
From 2012 - 2015, was a member of the 11-person panel responsible for
multi-station interviewing and then selection of aspiring medical
students at University of Wollongong, for postgraduate enrolment in the
MBBS degree offered by the School of Medicine.
Authoring of learning documentation as an adjunct to Case-Based
Learning- a self-initiated, self-managed project
 Subject areas: Diabetic Neuropathy, Envenomation, Lipids & Lipoproteins
in Type II Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Growth Hormone, PCR and single-
base substitutions in Human Genetic ‘abnormalities’.
 Have written PowerPoint presentations re the scientific evidence base for
Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Rationale: Trainee-doctors should be aware of herbal and other
supplements that their patients might be taking in addition to the
prescribed medicines. They need an understanding of the efficacy of
the alternative remedies, their side-effects and possible interactions
with pharmaceuticals already prescribed and being consumed.

Involvement in Governance and Policy at University of Wollongong
 From 2012-2015, was a member of the Policy and Governance Committee
in the School of Medicine, which makes recommendations on governance
and integrated academic assessment policies to the Faculty of Science,
Medicine and Health.
 Contributed knowledge expertise to Faculty Development committees.
Effective Communication and Working with Culturally Diverse Groups
 While a lecturer in English as a Second Language, and in Human
Structure & Function, taught Vietnamese native speakers and Australian
indigenous nursing students, respectively.
 In the role as lecturer and as a facilitator for tutorials, have enjoyed
communicating on a conversational level with students, with clinical staff
and with other scientific research staff.
Achievement: Worked with all groups effectively and maintained an
excellent level of communication and rapport with them.

Experience with Teaching and Learning  Worked in collaboration with the Dean of Medicine (Teaching and Learning) in the School of Medicine, University of Wollongong, from 2012- 2015.  Assessed new directions and methods for teaching and learning and applied them to the medical education of postgraduate students.  Recognized that learners would have different approaches to new learning. These included Genomics of Colorectal Cancer, DNA the Molecule of Inheritance, PCR in Medical Genetics (Cystic Fibrosis and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy), Growth Factor Signalling in Carcinogenesis, Gastro- oesophageal Reflux, Disorders of the Airway, Excitation-Contraction Coupling in Cardiac Function and Subcellular Metabolism.  Developed live demonstrations of the application of PCR to the mutations in Cystic Fibrosis and in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Achievement: Contribution of the scientific basis to clinical knowledge, treatments and investigations is seen to be a valuable addition to student knowledge by the University of Wollongong, Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health. Facilitating small medical tutorial groups, (8 students), postgraduates  Facilitated Case-Based Learning tutorials for postgraduate medical students, (mature adults) in the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong.  In addition to students holding first degrees in sciences and biomedicine, students from the faculties of Engineering (Chemical), Law and Arts were enrolled in my tutorial groups for postgraduate studies in medicine.  Developed assessment techniques, both formative and summative.  Contributed summative exam questions.  Developed a system of quizzes and short answer questions to aid students in their formative learning. The quizzes were incorporated into learning modules on Moodle.  Was personal tutor to 8 individual students, whom I also mentored. Achievement: Brought a patient, personal and constructive approach to learning and to the giving of constructive feedback. Helped students to develop techniques for deep and life-long learning, including application of private research and the use of databases for citations. In particular, instructed students on the use of the ENDNOTE software. Research (quantitative)  Carried out research in molecular biology, lipoprotein and apo-protein biochemistry, polymerase chain reaction in detection of point mutations and deletions, protein chemistry and characterization, immuno-affinity chromatography, electrophoresis of DNA and of polypeptides.  Developed transgenic Lucerne plants in investigations of the natriuretic peptide gene dosage effects in salinity and drought tolerance.

Frequently presented quantitative research findings at national (Atherosclerosis Society of Australia, Endocrine Society of Australia and Nutrition Society of Australia) and international (American Heart Association) conferences. Research (qualitative)  Designed a questionnaire to survey medical students’ opinions of Case- based Learning, in the School of Medicine, University of Wollongong.  Recorded interviews with students, then transcribed and coded the resulting information and performed thematic analysis.  Have used SPSS and NVivo software. Achievement: Have presented this qualitative research work at national conferences in Australia. Analysis of opinions has provided the basis for continuous improvement in the way information is presented and the techniques used in efficiently facilitating tutorials. Interviewing of prospective (postgraduate) medical students From 2012 - 2015, was a member of the 11-person panel responsible for multi-station interviewing and then selection of aspiring medical students at University of Wollongong, for postgraduate enrolment in the MBBS degree offered by the School of Medicine. Authoring of learning documentation as an adjunct to Case-Based Learning- a self-initiated, self-managed project  Subject areas: Diabetic Neuropathy, Envenomation, Lipids & Lipoproteins in Type II Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Growth Hormone, PCR and single- base substitutions in Human Genetic ‘abnormalities’.  Have written PowerPoint presentations re the scientific evidence base for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Rationale: Trainee-doctors should be aware of herbal and other supplements that their patients might be taking in addition to the prescribed medicines. They need an understanding of the efficacy of the alternative remedies, their side-effects and possible interactions with pharmaceuticals already prescribed and being consumed.
