1. Tony Squire Celebrates 25 Years of Mentoring throughVirginiaHeroes
In 1991, Richmond native and tennis star, Arthur Ash, Jr. founded Virginia Heroes a non-profit organization to
provide role models and mentors to Richmond Public Schools middle school students. Arthur Ash, Jr. dreamed
of providing Virginia children with real-life role models. Volunteer role models in this program help students
build self-confidence, develop sound values and prepare for a successful life. Tony Squire, Squires Boys
Basketball Education Foundation, Inc. founder and president, has served as a Virginia Heroes mentor since the
program was founded 25 years ago. Mentoring is part of Tony’s core values. Much like he does with his
basketball players Tony spends time with these 6th graders in Richmond Public Schools teaching life skills and
sharing his value of working hard to achieve success. In addition to the Virginia Heroes program, Tony also
volunteers to work with and mentor juveniles at the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center.
