Hello and welcome to our Application Tips and Tricks Webinar. We are so excited that you have joined us today. My name is Shelley Clifford and I am on the full time MBA admissions team here at McCombs.
This webinar will cover the application process - specifically the requirements to get your application submitted and will hopefully also help you better navigate our application process. If you are interested in learning more about the program, we have a variety of on and off campus events through early December. You can find a list of events in the Admissions Section of the Texas MBA website.POLL – event attendance? Started application? We will be back online with a one hour Admissions Office Chat Session just before the Round 1 Deadline. This online chat session is designed to help applicants get their application questions answered just before our Round 1 deadline of October 16, 2012.Admissions Office Hours (Round 1) – Thursday October 11th- 12-1pm CST:Admissions Office Hours (Round 2) - Thursday, November 29th Two Sessions:Session for International Students: 9-10am CSTSession for Domestic Students: 12-1pm CSTThese one hour chat sessions are designed to help applicants get their application questions just before the Round 2 deadline of December 4, 2012. A morning session is available for international applicants while domestic applicants should attend the lunch (noon) session.
Here are our application deadlines. I wanted to highlight that we encourage you to apply when you are able to present the best application possible. However, you should note that the Round 2 deadline is the priority deadline for scholarships and Round 3 is our final deadline available for international applications. An important reference document for you is the Application Instructions found in the Admissions – Applying to McCombs section of the website.
Your application to the Texas MBA program is a shared process between McCombs and the University of Texas Graduate and International Admissions Center, or “GIAC”, as referenced above. This chart shows the different stages of the process and what you need to do to manage the process at McCombs and also what you need to do for the process at GIAC.An important reference document for you is the Application Instructions found in the Admissions – Applying to McCombs section of the website.
When you’re ready to apply, you’ll do so through the McCombs application website. This is the same website you visited if you registered as a prospect or visited campus and the address is noted above. This is what the screen looks like.
This is where the application link is, once you have logged onto the McCombs application website.Click “Apply” here for the Full Time program and you enter the application.
Once Inside the Application you will see the different sections of the application – as well as other components including status of your recommendations. You could get started by clicking a section, under “Fill Out the Application”.
When you’re moving around the application between sections, you will want to use the breadcrumbs. Be sure to save any information you’ve entered on the page. Please note that in order to move on to the next section, you will have to save all required fields which are indicated by a red asterisk. You could always access by clicking on “Return to Checklist” in the top left corner.
Application sections will change from red to green as you complete the sections and move through the different components of the application in this section of the website. You could leave the application at any time and return to it later by clicking where you see the “Continue Application” button.
Let’s move through the sections of the application starting with the Biographical Section. The biographical section is where we will collect demographic information about you. Any field with a red asterisk is required. If there is no red asterisk, this indicates that the field is optional.A note on the address section: there are TWO types of addresses that are required – Current and Permanent. Of course, they could be the same but you have the option to specify two different addresses if you would prefer. A quick distinction re: Domestic vs. International applicant – NOTE: if you are a permanent resident of the US, i.e. you already have your Green Card in hand, you are considered a domestic applicant
To determine whether or not you qualify as a Texas resident, please review the information on the residency page noted here. Please note that the Admissions Office does not confirm or determine an applicant’s Texas residency. Official determination is made by the University’s Residency Office after you have received and accepted an offer of admission AND have completed the online residency questionnaire.
Personal Information SectionFor the first section here, unless you are a dual degree student, i.e. getting another graduate UT degree, you will select the 2 year MBA. For your information, there are several dual degree options with other graduate programs here at UT. If you are seeking a dual degree, please be sure to reference the instructions on the website regarding how the application process is different for dual degree applicants. You will also have to select a proposed primary and secondary concentration. If you only have one area of focus, you could select the same for both Primary and Secondary. If you don’t have a specific area of focus, you should just select General Management.
There are also some additional information requests in this section with questions about family education, foreign language proficiencies and other MBA programs that you may be considering. Some of this information is required by the University for reporting purposes and some information is optional. While we would prefer that you provide the optional information to help us know you better, it’s up to you to decide whether you include it or not.
You’ll provide information about your Education History here. Please do not list any community colleges, continuing education classes in the first item. List the college from which you received your undergraduate degree here. All other educational institutions attended could be listed later. For your GPA, please note that we only need your GPA from your junior and senior years of college – i.e. your upper division GPA. Please be sure to include your grading scale only if it is not based on a 4-point system.
You will have to upload your transcripts twice, once to the McCombs application and then again to GIAC. First, you will upload unofficial transcripts here for the McCombs system. After you submit your application and it’s been processed and you have paid the application fee, you will also upload your unofficial transcripts to GIAC.Official transcripts are not required unless you receive and accept an admission offer.
Test Score SectionScores must be sent to Texas by the Round Deadline to be considered on time for each particular round.
The TOEFL/IELTS test is required of all international applicants EXCEPT those who have an undergrad degree in an English speaking country. If you are a permanent resident (or a domestic applicant) the TOEFL test is not required. We now also accept the IELTS. Please refer to our website for complete information on TOEFL/IELTS waivers. Please note that the testing waiver request is to be made only within the application. There is no need to email us separately to request a TOEFL/IELTS waiver.
Employment SectionList your most current employer first. Please input the number of months of fulltime work experience since you completed your undergraduate study.Your resume should be professional style and please be sure to include your dates of employment in each position.
Recommendation Section:Be sure to start this part of the application early enough to give your recommenders plenty of time to submit a recommendation. Here you will enter in the recommender contact information and you should then select the send email option .Your recommenders will then receive emails from our application system with a link to submit their recommendation in support of your application.
Once you click on any one of the “Save” options in this section, your recommenders will receive the emails I described with the previous slide.
Your recommender should receive an email from TexasMBA@mccombs.utexas.edu immediately after you click any SAVE option in the application, as illustrated above.
You are responsible for making sure your recommendations are submitted on time. You should monitor and manage your recommendations closely. You have the ability to edit/change contact info up to the time you submit your application.
You can change names/emails by clicking edit.
Two short answer text entries, and one statement of purpose essay are required.
These are just required statements re various legal requirements about your application and the whole process. Please be sure to review them carefully and certify each one. You will have to do so in order to be allowed to submit your application.
Review processYou will now have the opportunity to reviewall sections and change/edit as needed. You could also generate a print preview to help you with the editing and review process.
After you’ve finished your review and you are satisfied that this application best reflects your candidacy for the Texas MBA program, please click “Continue to Invoice”.
Your invoice and fee payment will now be processed through a different university system called “What I Owe”. You will get an email after you submit your application with application fee payment instructions. More on the application fee payment process later.
This is where you officially submit. After you click here, no turning back. The pop-up window is your last chance to cancel.
After you make your payment, it will be reflected here (one business day delay) and the Pay Invoice and Submit Sections will be green. Recommendation section shows the status of each of your recommendations. It will be green if you have paid and both recs are complete. If you click Continue Application Process button, you have the option to print your sections.
Monitor your status on the home page. If you’ve applied to multiple MBA programs or to MSTC, you will have all submitted application statuses displayed in the yellow section here.
Important Next Steps after you click Submit:Pay your application fee – Look for email from UT Office of AdmissionsUpload unofficial transcripts to GIACMonitor document status as this can cause delays if there are issues
