• In DirectQuery over relational sources there are a set of queries (as defined in
the Get Data or Query Editor dialog) that logically define the data that is available
in the field list. This is not the case when connecting to an OLAP source such as
SAP BW. Instead, when connecting to the SAP server using Get Data, just the
Infocube or BEx Query is selected. Then all the Key Figures and dimensions of
the selected Infocube/BEx Query will be available in the field list.
• Similarly, there is no Query Editor when connecting to SAP BW. The data source
settings (for example, server name) can be changed by selecting Edit Queries >
Data source settings. The settings for any Variables can be changed by
selecting Edit Queries > Edit Variables.
• Given the unique nature of OLAP sources, there are additional restrictions (for
both modelling and visualizations) that apply, in addition to the normal
restrictions imposed for DirectQuery.

What about Embedded BW in SAP S/4HANA?
Since the release of SAP NetWeaver 7.0, SAP ERP systems automatically include SAP BW.
The SAP BW technology that exists inside such an ERP system is called ‘Embedded BW’.
Similar features were also available under ‘HANA Live’
§ The Embedded BW is used to support certain business processes in the
SAP Business Suite and in SAP S/4HANA, e.g. integrated financial planning
processes in SAP S/4HANA (aka BPC Optimized)
§ Embedded BW is not recommended for building an Enterprise Data
Warehouse, considering multiple SAP Applications on SAP HANA in
productive environments regarding:
§ Upgrades and patches
§ Resource allocation and capacity planning
§ System Management, Workload Management and Monitoring
§ Backup & Recovery
§ Lifecycle management
§ High Availability & Disaster Recovery
