Senior Charge Nurse - INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, LONDON CHEST HOSPITAL (BARTS &
THE LONDON) NHS TRUST (Teaching Hospital)
The London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green (founded 1848) is home to varied multi-disciplinary
staff, including some of Britain’s leading specialists. The hospital was one of the first in the
United Kingdom to develop open-heart surgery, using the heart/lung bypass technique pioneered
in the United States. The hospital has 113 beds and has a specialist stroke unit, in 2007 the
hospital had 185 mergency admissions with a primary diagnosis of stroke, of these 93% had
Computerised Tomography (CT) scan within 24 hrs of admission.
The London Chest Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ITU) cares for patients who have undergone
cardiacthoracic surgery, and complex cardiology. Patients are admitted from the hospital's Heart
Attack Centre. The ITU also provides support for patients in multi-organ failure and respiratory
support for the more complex respiratory conditions including patients suffering from cystic
fibrosis. Patients are cared for post operatively/procedure using the state-of-the-art equipment,
including ventricular assist devices. It is a 9 beds 1:1 level 3 patient nurse ratio. The ITU is
supported by an adjacent high dependency unit (HDU). The 6 beds cardiothoracic HDU is 1:2
level 2 patient nurse ratio and is where patients progress to following their ITU admission. There

Critical Care incorporates general adult intensive care, high dependency, critical care outreach
and the critical care follow-up clinic. The critical care unit has 27 beds managed and staffed by a
large multi-disciplinary team. It is a 1:1 level 3 patient nurse ratio, and 1:2 level 2 patient nurse
ratio, there is more than 3000 ITU admissions per annum. All care is consultant led. There are
currently eight critical care consultants, who provide 24 hour cover for the unit. There are strong

The hospital is home to specialist critical care, stroke, cardiac and surgical units. As a public

nurse patient ratio. The unit does admit post general and cardiac surgery patients, very sick

The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital was established in August 1988. The hospital has 339 beds,
with staff strength of 1,164. DEPARTMENTS: Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and

Gynaecology, Dental and Maxillofacial, Opthalmology, Anaesthesiology/ICU, Paediatrics.
The intensive care unit consist of 5 level 3 with 1:1 nurse patient ratio. The unit admit post
general and renal surgery patients and very sick patients requiring ITU care are also admitted.

Duties / Responsibilities
• In charge of five bedded intensive care unit.
• Supervision and teaching of intensive care nursing skills to non ICU registered nurses and
preparing them for the ICU course.
• As a senior nurse I do undertake Venepuncture for taking blood samples and
administration of intravenous medication.
• Monitoring the administration of prescribed medication by junior staff.
• Co-ordinates the activities of the ICU with various departments of the hospital.
• Directly answerable to the hospital management on the activities of the unit.

SENIOR NURSING OFFICER Emergency Ward Murtala Mohd Specialist Hospital, Kano State,
Nigeria.
Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, owned by Kano State is the largest state
government-owned 400 beds hospital in northern Nigeria and has the highest patients'
attendance in the region. Medical, surgical, obstetric, laboratory, radiology and physiotherapy
services are offered in the different departments of the hospital. The hospital serves mainly
residents in Kano, especially those from the metropolis. Patients from neighbouring states and
countries such as Katsina state, Jigawa state, Zamfara state, Niger republic and Mali also attend
the hospital.
The Emergency ward is a 10 bedded units headed by a consultant neurologist. Post trauma
patients with head injury that require specialist nursing care are admitted to the unit from
accident and emergency. There is an average of 900 admissions per annum.
Duties / Responsibilities
• Supervising nurses that look after patients that were admitted from accident and
emergency unit.
• Close supervision and monitoring of seriously ill patients
• Assisting and coordinating the activities of the unit with the nurse in charge
• Conducting teaching sessions to junior colleagues and student nurses
• Performing resuscitation to cardiac arrest patients
• Left the unit in Jan 1999 and attended a nine months general intensive care nursing
course at Jos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria.

NURSING OFFICER MALE SURGICAL WARD, MURTALA MOHD SPECIALIST HOSPITAL, KANO
STATE NIGERIA -
Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, owned by Kano State is the largest state

to four nurse to patients ratio.

• Pre discharge education and teaching of patients and their family.

STATE NIGERIA - Was posted to the ward as a newly qualified nurse.
Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, owned by Kano State is the largest state
government-owned 400 beds hospital in northern Nigeria and has the highest patients'
attendance in the region. Medical, surgical, obstetric, laboratory, radiology and physiotherapy
services are offered in the different departments of the hospital. The hospital serves mainly
residents in Kano, especially those from the metropolis. Patients from neighbouring states and
countries such as Katsina state, Jigawa state, Zamfara state, Niger republic and Mali also attend
the hospital.
The Orthopaedic ward admits patients that require orthopaedic intervention as a result of road
traffic or domestic accident. Most of the nurses in this ward are orthopaedic nurses. It is a 30
bedded ward headed by a senior nurse, while the whole orthopaedic department is headed by a

consultant orthopaedic surgeon.
• Under went a six months clinical supervision by a senior nurse.
• Provide general nursing care to orthopedic patients.
• Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of a senior nurse.
• Was promoted to a nursing officer I and transferred to male medical ward.

The hospital was one of the first in the United Kingdom to develop open-heart surgery, using the heart/lung bypass technique pioneered in the United States. The hospital has 113 beds and has a specialist stroke unit, in 2007 the hospital had 185 mergency admissions with a primary diagnosis of stroke, of these 93% had Computerised Tomography (CT) scan within 24 hrs of admission. The London Chest Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ITU) cares for patients who have undergone cardiacthoracic surgery, and complex cardiology. Patients are admitted from the hospital's Heart Attack Centre. The ITU also provides support for patients in multi-organ failure and respiratory support for the more complex respiratory conditions including patients suffering from cystic fibrosis.
