Many initiatives for running applications inside containers have been scoped to run on a single host. Using Docker containers for large-scale production environments poses interesting challenges, especially when deploying distributed Big Data applications like Apache Spark. Today, most any application can be “Dockerized.” However, there are special challenges when deploying a distributed application such as Spark on containers. This session will describe how to overcome these challenges in deploying Spark on Docker containers, with many practical tips and techniques for running Spark in a container environment. Containers are typically used to run stateless applications on a single host. There are significant real-world enterprise requirements that need to be addressed when running a stateful, distributed application in a secure multi-host container environment. There are decisions that need to be made concerning which tools and infrastructure to use. There are many choices with respect to container managers, orchestration frameworks, and resource schedulers that are readily available today and some that may be available tomorrow including:] • Mesos • Kubernetes • Docker Swarm Each has its own strengths and weaknesses; each has unique characteristics that may make it suitable, or unsuitable, for Spark. Understanding these differences is critical to the successful deployment of Spark on Docker containers. This session will describe the work done by the BlueData engineering team to run Spark inside containers, on a distributed platform, including the evaluation of various orchestration frameworks and lessons learned. Big-Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) in an enterprise environment requires meeting the often contradictory goals of (1) providing your data scientists, analysts, and data engineers with a self-service consumption model; (2) delivering agile and scalable on-demand infrastructure for the rapidly evolving ecosystem of big data frameworks and application software; while (3) ensuring enterprise-grade capabilities for isolation, security, monitoring, etc. In this presentation at our BDaaS meetup in Santa Clara, Tom Phelan (chief architect and co-founder of BlueData) reviewed these goals and how to resolve the potential contradictions. The rapid growth of in-memory compute applications is not surprising given the tremendous performance gains they can offer. Jobs that used to take hours can now take minutes or seconds as they are no longer subject to the rotational and seek latencies of spinning media. While Flash memory provide some relief, it is still a hundred times slower than the DRAM that in-memory compute applications utilize as their primary storage. One drawback to in-memory compute applications is the high cost associated with DRAM. Not only are the acquisition costs an order of magnitude more expensive than Flash, DRAM consumes far more power. Power can be a significant issue in data centers besides contributing a major part to the operational costs. In addition, a single server has limited capacity for DRAM and datasets that are larger, need to find an alternate solution or cope with the nuisance of sharding. Furthermore, in order to utilize the maximum capacity of DRAM in a server, higher cost DRAM needs to be installed further escalating the cost of compute. We discuss a paradigm to allow in-memory computing applications to extend their capacity by utilizing Flash memory; often with minimal performance loss. We give examples of applications that have been modified to utilize the paradigm and show performance comparisons. We also discuss TCO and the relative cost per transaction of the different solutions.

DeepLearning4J (DL4J) is a powerful Open Source distributed framework that brings Deep Learning to the JVM (it can serve as a DIY tool for Java, Scala, Clojure and Kotlin programmers). It can be used on distributed GPUs and CPUs. It is integrated with Hadoop and Apache Spark. ND4J is a Open Source, distributed and GPU-enabled library that brings the intuitive scientific computing tools of the Python community to the JVM. Training neural network models using DL4J, ND4J and Spark is a powerful combination, but it presents some unexpected issues that can compromise performance and nullify the benefits of well written code and good model design. In this talk I will walk through some of those problems and will present some best practices to prevent them, coming from lessons learned when putting things in production.

For a long time DB related testing in Java world has been a real pain and most developers tried to reduce number of such tests as much as possible. With good in-memory database implementations like H2, schema migration solutions like Liquibase or Flyway, containerization with libraries like TestContainers, database management is now much simpler. But test data management is still a pain. Some developers use SQL dumps, others insert data via JPA/JDBC or rely on prepared data sets. Good old DBUnit may be a good option, but it is not so developer friendly and not adopted well for modern annotations driven development style. Database Rider closes the gap between modern Java development environment and DBUnit, bringing DBUnit closer to your JUnit tests, so database testing will feel like a breeze. In addition to flexible data sets management this library provides other useful features: programmatic data sets definition, leak hunting, data sets export, constraints management, etc. As contributor and loyal user for many years, I would like to share my experience with Database Rider and demonstrate how to make database testing a fun again!

I remember how we wrote tons of code for each layer repeating almost the same parts for every application. Add unit and integration testing to understand how much time and efforts has been spent on repeatable work. All cool ideas around DDD (domain driven design) and Hexagonal Architecture was just a nice theory because reality hasn’t allow us to implement it easily. Even Dependency Injection with Spring framework was completely focused on traditional layered approach, not even talking about JavaEE platform. Today we have Spring Boot ecosystem covering most of our needs for integration with almost all possible technologies and microservices architectural trend, enabling completely new approach to build Java applications around domain model. It is so natural to build Java domain-oriented services and connect them with external world using ports and adapters, that Hexagonal Architecture is almost enabled by default. Almost any application or software system manages data. It is hard to imagine test automation that is not affected by this fact. Almost any application or software system manages data. It is hard to imagine test automation that is not affected by this fact. There are many differenct approaches how to prepare system under test, providing predefined test data: use application UI, invoke API methods, run business logic directly, access DB from test scenarios, etc. In this talk we will review most of existing approaches, starting from the easiest and the most popular ones and finishing with really tricky ways to manage your test data for large distributed systems. Usually it is hard to analyze personal effectiveness and detect wastes in development process because developer’s work decomposition is not transparent and available for analysis. As a good sample of ineffective process imagine developer, who spends 1 day on task implementation and then reimplements it several times according to code review notes during next 2 days. Or another developer, who is waiting for code review during 2 days, switching context to other tasks, finally gets notes and switches back to initial task, trying to refresh all details in his head. And so on and so forth… Code review tool usage helps to aggregate lots of useful information about any code change at any stage (static analysis, code review, rework, acceptance, integration into main branch). In this talk I’m going to demontrate how this information could be used for detailed analysis of development effectiveness and wastes detection. Based on mentioned analysis you could implement many improvements for your development process and then measure their success.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
