13th September 2013
The WSPCR was requested to organise a research masterclass for the Directors of Nursing from all the Welsh Health Boards on Friday 11th Sept. It was funded by the Health Minister and attended by the CNO. It also included the Head of the NISCHR and the manager of AHSC. The masterclass included the presentation of the Welsh Community Nurse Research Strategy which aims to raise the quality and quantity of research in Community Nursing in Wales. The workshop also generated further areas for research activity/priority.

Key point: gain membership of the community
the physical nearness or distance of the granting agency…
influenced the interplay of communication in the grant
application process, which in turn influenced….how
comprehensive the grant proposal, how rigid and
technical the form, etc

Joining the community
It’s not that when you go for a proposal you lay your cards on the table
and get the money. That’s not it. There are lots of other influences,
and interactions with people that are very important
You can’t look at preparing a proposal as an isolated
experience….you’re not just accumulating knowledge [as you write],
but meeting people who are going to play a role down the line…
When a neophyte thinks about going to meetings, they tend to think
strictly of the papers. That’s important, but it’s not the only thing…
It is uncanny how you talk to someone at a meeting and then five
years later, that person evolves in your life in some way. If you’re
aware of that, there is a tendency early to nurture these things

Proposal for the study of
toast
Written in response to a call for proposals in the area of Chance and Destiny.
Whether toast lands butter side up is central to our understanding of whether the
world is governed by chance.
Smith found no difference between butter-side-up and butter-side-down outcomes
in a trial (BSU vs BSD). However, he used only English bread, and it may be that
bread baked in Wales behaves differently.
This proposal aims to establish whether the properties of Welsh bread differ, using
the Criteria for Bread (CfB) categories and a bread catapult described elsewhere.
Using sufficient quantities of bread from well-established Welsh bakeries, we will
measure the properties of Welsh bread and, through direct observation by trained
assessors, the frequency of BSU and BSD outcomes.
The impact on public services will be considerable. Should results indicate that the
world is not governed by chance, then money should be diverted towards offerings
to placate the gods. If it is governed by chance, then psychological support for
victims of random toast-related accidents in particular should be increased.
