Ku Klux Klan

According to the Klan, the blood drop represents the blood
shed by Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for the White Race.
The KKK
• The Ku Klux Klan is three past and present
organisations in the USA. It is a racist, anti-
Semitic (hatred towards Jews) movement that
used extreme violence to achieve its goals of
  racial segregation and white supremacy.
• Of all the types of hate groups that exist in the
United States, the Klan remains the one with
the greatest number of national and local
  organizations around the country.
Important Dates
• 1st Klan – Christmas eve 1865 – 1870
• 2nd Klan – 1915 – 1944
• 3rd Klan – 1946 - present
First Klan
• The first Klan was founded in 1865 on
Christmas Eve in Pulaski, TN, by six veterans of
the Confederate Army. The word clan means
  circle in Greek.
• The clan spread across the south with the aim
to restore white supremacy. This was done via
  threats, violence and murder.
• The first Klan declined slowly after the 1st
World war as women had more rights and
they saw this as a threat.
Second Klan
• In 1915, the second klan was founded in
Georgia, Atlanta on thanks giving. In 1921, it
adopted a modern system of recruiting, which
payed an initial fee and costume costs.
 • Between 1915-1927, the Klan grew to over 8
 millions members.
 • The Klan disbanded again in 1944
due to WW2 and the absence of
any internal threat to the nation.
 •They adopted the burning cross
symbol to be used as a symbol of
 intimidation.
Third Klan
• The Klan was again reborn in the late 40’s, early
50’s to defend the American people of the
imposition of the so called Civil Rights laws.
• It formed alliances with Southern police
  departments such as Birmingham, Alabama.
Several members of the KKK were convicted of
murder in the deaths of civil right workers and
  children.
• There are around 5,000 members to date.
• Today the KKK are seen as a terrorist organisation
as they planned to blow up a Dallas Gas Plant but
  were stopped by police.
Confederacy
• It was a government set up from 1861-1865 by 11 southern slave states: South
Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia,
  Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee.
• The Confederate States of America was created by secessionists (withdrawing
from a union) in Southern slave states who refused to remain in a nation that
they believed was turning them into second–class citizens.
• Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States of America.
• In April 1865, Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulyssess S.
Grant (president of the United states at the time of the civil war) and with that
  the confederacy effectively collapsed.
• The end of the confederacy saw the adoption of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth
  and Fifteenth amendments.
Amendments
• December 6th 1865 - The thirteenth amendment
was outlawing slavery, except as punishment for
  a crime.
• July 9th 1868 - The fourteenth amendment
prohibited state and local governments from
depriving persons of life liberty or property
without certain steps being taken to ensure
fairness. States and governments were no longer
to deny Black people of being citizens of the
  United States.
• February 3rd 1970 – The fifteenth amendment
prohibits each governments in the United States
from denying a citizen the right to vote based on
that citizens race, colour or previous slavery.
Costumes
• First Klan - they dressed in flowing white sheets, their face covered with
white masks and with skulls at their saddle horns to look like spirits of
  the confederate dead.

• Different coloured costumes represented different roles in the clan
1. Purple - Imperial Wizard (the leader of the Klan, the highest rank)
2. Green - Grand Dragon (constituting the whole area of the Klans
   activities)
3. Reddish Purple - Great Titan (state representative)
4. Black - Knighthawk (security)
5. Red – Kleagle (spokesperson to recruit new
   members)
Quitting the clan
• On the Jerry Springer show they did a bit on ‘quitting the clan’
where a man of 70 years old was interviewed about his feelings
on blacks in America. When interviewed behind the scene he
said that he had no problem with black people but didn’t want
to socialise with them as that's how he was bought up but when
in front of the crowd he said he disliked them and said he if he
could do the lynch that he was at when he was 12 again he
would as the man deserved it. This was a shock to everyone in
the crowd and Jerry was amused at the mans stupidity. As well
as having the 70 year old man there are 4 other members of the
Klan that appear, the aim of the show is to change the people’s
believes and make them leave the clan. Jerry bought on a young
women called Ann who bought up her two sons aged 2 and 4
with the views of the clan, showing that the KKK’s ideas still exist
  today.
