This document analyzes two music videos using Goodwin's features for analyzing music videos. It summarizes the key relationships between the visuals and lyrics in Ed Sheeran's "The A Team" video, noting how the visuals depict what is described in the lyrics. It also notes how Noah and the Whale's "5 Years Time" video effectively synchronizes the music and visual editing. The document then evaluates both videos in terms of Goodwin's additional features such as music genre, close-ups of artists, voyeurism, and intertextual references.
2. Ed Sheeran- The A team http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWcs5H-qgQ
3. Goodwin’s Features. Relationship between visuals and lyrics; - There are many points in the video were the visuals match the lyrics for example when he says ‘white lips, pale face’ the girl in the video has a white face and pale lips. -Other examples are ‘going mad for a couple of grams’ at this point it shows her buying drugs. Relationship between music and visuals;-Every new line the images changes, this shows that the edits and the music have the same pace and matches. This video is a medium pace, this helps so you can see clearly the story of the video.
4. Goodwin’s Features. Music genre may have it’s own style and iconography; -This video doesn’t really capture this as Ed Sheeran is linked to all different types of music genre’s such as Folk rock, acoustic, hip-hop and grime. Lots of CUs of the main artist/band; -In this video the artist only appears once. - I think they have done this because the lyrics of the song is describing another persons life and he is telling the story of girl and is not really involved in her life.
5. Goodwin’s Features. Artist/band may have their own star iconography e.g. trademark style. -Ed Sheeran is associated with many genres so each song/video he produces are different. -He usually performs with other artist and only recently has started his solo career. -Maybe his trademark is reinventing himself each time he creates and new video.
6. Goodwin’s Features. Voyeurism; -In this video you experience a life that is normally closed to us, as this video is about prostitution, drugs, etc. -You also are able to watch the girls life fall down which is something that is personal to somebody. Some images also show her getting dress, showing close up of the chest area. Intertexual reference; -This video is a made up story but it could relate to charity ads maybe, trying to make you aware that things like this do happen to people.
7. Noah and the Whale- 5 Years Time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8YCSJpF4g4
8. Goodwin’s Features. Relationship between visuals and lyrics; -The lyrics and the visuals match well in this video, for example when it says ‘sun sunsun’ people are there pointing to the sky and the words come up on screen each time it is said. Relationship between music and visuals; -The music cut to the editing in this video. Every new line the images changes, this shows that the edits and the music have the same pace and matches.
9. Goodwin's Features. Music genre may have it’s own style and iconography; - I’d say that the music genre this video fits in with is indie-pop, the beat of the music is upbeat and fun and the indie-pop genre is known to be a fun upbeat style. Lots of CUs of the main artist/band; - There aren’t many close ups of the band/artist but there are a lot of shot that involve the artist through out the video.
10. Goodwin’s Features. Artist/band may have their own star iconography e.g. trademark style. - I think Noah and the whale’s trademark is to create a fun video that everyone will enjoy. - In a lot of their video they always have the four member of the band that play the instruments stood in a line, usually in the same order.
11. Goodwin’s Features. Voyeurism; - You kind of get to watch the band do thing you wouldn’t normally see, for example when there walking down the street or when two of them are on a ‘date’. Intertexual reference; - I wouldn’t say thatthis video has much referenceto other media products asas basically people acting outthe lyrics.
