The Brief
USP
• Hybrid of Music and Fashion ( isn’t currently a magazine like
this on the market)
• Given away a supplement in Northern Echo , so it is local and
different.
• no other premium magazines given free at this standard.
AIMS
• Publication name : LN
• Target audience: 16-24
• Genre: hybrid of fashion and music
• Publication : magazine
• Financial: independent through advertising sales( selling
advert slots within magazine pages)
Problems + how to fix them
• Will need to consider the secondary audience of the Northern
Echo.
• No taboo language (mild if needed)
• No nudity
• No offensive or inappropriate
• Remember age range of readers
Use appropriate language with no taboo subjects.
Content isn’t to mature and shocking
PCC
• Accuracy – to refrain from breaking the code I will ensure that
the stories and pictures aren’t inaccurate.
• Children- I have to ensure I have permission to photograph
them from parents/guardians.
• Privacy- when working with people I have to get there
permission before asking them questions on their personal life
and using there pictures.
• Discrimination- I have to be aware of
race, colour, gender, sexual orientation and disability when
writing. No personal comments about them.
• Intrusion- with delicate cases I have to enquire information
with sympathy and discretion

Being local helps my magazine?
• Local companies and
businesses advertise
• Local people can be included
in adverts
• Run stories on thing which
are current in North East
Gap in the Market
• There aren’t a lot of local magazines which appeal to young
audience 16-24.
• In the current market no hybrid of just music and fashion.
• Local stories in high end feel magazine
• Free as a supplement

First DPS
•
•
•
•

to test the effectiveness of the DPS and if they would appeal
Gathered a focus group aged 17-18
Students
Asked them questions about the 2 DPS what they liked, what
worked , what didn’t.
• From this is learnt what my audience preferred and liked , this
is can use to create future product.
MOCK UP 1 – THE GRUNGE
“the colours express the ‘dark
and dirty side’ linking the
article together ”

“Not sure
where to
start
reading
the
article”

“the models give a visual view of the grunge. They
stand out and inspire clothing creations”

“interesting part
about how we can
create the look”
MOCK UP 2 – THE GRUNGE
“layout is better , clear and easy to see”
“maybe rearrange the pages the other
way round”

“The
text
it too
small
to
read
”

“enjoyed reading the article
is way very clear about the
grunge “

“like how the colours are minimalistic making the
header and kicker stand out”
Audience Feedback (focus
group)

•
•
•

Colours give the connotation of the grunge look
Colours in DPS 1 are eye catching
Content is good and effective
Models illustrate a way to get grunge clothing
Layout better in DPS 2

Things to take forward
Layout of DPS 2
Colours of DPS 1 ( 3 colour palette)
The content
The models and imagery
Include a personal story (locality)
My Ideas
The Name
• Is it understandable?
• What does it stand for? Why is
this used?
• Does it fit my genre of
magazine?

L
N
IDEA
Local fashion and hybrid magazine for teenagers and students.
 Centred around local community
 Developing and inspiring creative fashion
 Strengths – A hybrid which has the best of recent fashion and
local and common music. These are both popular types of
magazines already. Locally will appeal to a large amount of
local students. Its also affordable.
 Weakness – competition with already branded , popular
magazines.
Branding
• Will be branded by its limit to 3
colours (change due to issue, linked to
each DPS)
• The font used for my title will be
reused within pages of the magazine
(contents page) to make the link
between that font and my magazine.
• My layout will always have the page
dived into 2 columns. This as a
reoccurring feature will help brand my
magazine
• The font for text in each article –
Calibri. Easy to read and works well
with all titles.
• in the corner of the page a coat
hanger (fashion) music note (music)
will be placed to help identify and
brand my magazine as a music and
fashion.
Stylistics
• Front cover – 3 colour palette
changes with each issue dues to
content, current trends and
season.
• Content – each article styled
and coloured individually.
• Imagery- real people , no
‘models’
• Fonts

Wont cost a lot
Will help brand my product
Distributed to places where Northern Echo popular

• Distributed by comag
- similar style and quality
- no current magazine published by them
Conclusion
•You asked me to produce a product in any genre which must be self financed
and fit the audience range of 16-25. As you can see from within my pitch I have
met these aims.
My magazine meets them by:
•Being 16-24 it covers a large age range meaning I can get a lot of readership and
circulation.
•Combines two current and popular genres
•Gap in the market (no current hybrid)
•I enjoy these two genres so can put my own personal taste into the magazine.
• A lot more detail and content variations because the two genres are interesting.
•It is cheap and affordable for the age range( disposable income)
