Succession “Losers”: What Happens to Executives Passed Over for the CEO Job? By David F. Larcker, Stephen A. Miles, and Brian Tayan Stanford Closer Look Series Overview: Shareholders pay considerable attention to the choice of executive selected as the new CEO whenever a change in leadership takes place. However, without an inside look at the leading candidates to assume the CEO role, it is difficult for shareholders to tell whether the board has made the correct choice. In this Closer Look, we examine CEO succession events among the largest 100 companies over a ten-year period to determine what happens to the executives who were not selected (i.e., the “succession losers”) and how they perform relative to those who were selected (the “succession winners”). We ask: • Are the executives selected for the CEO role really better than those passed over? • What are the implications for understanding the labor market for executive talent? • Are differences in performance due to operating conditions or quality of available talent? • Are boards better at identifying CEO talent than other research generally suggests?

Intended for grade 6 learners. : By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and understand different types of notes, their durations, and how they contribute to rhythm in music.Absolutely, I'd be happy to help you create a lesson plan for teaching different kinds of notes to students. This plan assumes a basic understanding of music notation, including the staff, clefs, and basic rhythms. Feel free to adjust the timeline and activities based on the level and pace of your students. • Whole Note: A hollow oval shape without a stem, representing the longest duration. • Half Note: A hollow oval shape with a stem, representing half the duration of a whole note. • Quarter Note: A filled-in oval shape with a stem, representing a quarter of the duration of a whole note. • Eighth Note: A filled-in oval shape with a stem and a flag, representing an eighth of the duration of a whole note. • Sixteenth Note: A filled-in oval shape with a stem and two flags, representing a sixteenth of the duration of a whole note. 1. Whole Rest: A rectangular block hanging below the line, representing the same duration as a whole note. 2. Half Rest: A small line curving downwards from the line, representing half the duration of a whole rest. 3. Quarter Rest: A squiggly line resembling the number "7," representing a quarter of the duration of a whole rest. 4. Eighth Rest: A small horizontal line with a flag, representing an eighth of the duration of a whole rest. 5. Computer is just a dumb machine made up of different electronic components. It is like a box which cannot do anything by itself. It is the user who tells the computer “what it has to do?” Why Programming? If we need our computer to perform some task, we first have to teach the computer in detail “how it will accomplish ?? Why Programming? Programming is more about problem solving skills than writing the code itself. •Programming teaches you how to understand, analyze and solve the problems. It enhances your analytical reasoning abilities and helps you cope with daily real life problems as well. •Hence learning to program is important because it develops analytical and problem solving abilities. Programming Language 12 •A programming language is an artificial language designed to communicate instructions to a computer. Programming Language A formal computer language that includes a controlled vocabulary and set of grammatical rules designed to instruct a computer how to perform specific tasks. Programming languages are used to create programs to control the behavior of a machine or to express algorithms. The description of a programming language is usually split into two components: syntax (form) and semantics (meaning). •A programming language is a notation for writing computer programming language, any of various languages for expressing a set of detailed instructions for a digital computer. Such instructions can be executed directly when they are in the computer manufacturer-specific numerical form known as machine language, after a simple substitution process when expressed in a corresponding assembly language, or after translation from some “higher-level” language. Although there are many computer languages, relatively few are widely used. Language types Machine and assembly languages A machine language consists of the numeric codes for the operations that a particular computer can execute directly. The codes are strings of 0s and 1s, or binary digits (“bits”), which are frequently converted both from and to hexadecimal (base 16) for human viewing and modification. Machine language instructions typically use some bits to represent operations, such as addition, and some to represent operands, or perhaps the location of the next instruction. Machine language is difficult to read and write, since it does not resemble conventional mathematical notation or human language, and its codes vary from computer to computer. Assembly language is one level above machine language. It uses short mnemonic codes for instructions and allows the programmer to introduce names for blocks of memory that hold data. One might thus write “add pay, total” instead of “0110101100101000” for an instruction that adds two numbers. Algorithmic languages Algorithmic languages are designed to express mathematical or symbolic computations. They can express algebraic operations in notation similar to mathematics and allows it.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “Enterprise Knowledge Graphs: The Importance of Semantics” on May 9, 2024, at the annual Data Summit in Boston. In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. While data experts tend to focus on the graph database components (RDF triple store or a label property graph), Hedden emphasizes they should not overlook the importance of the semantic layer.

ScyllaDB has the potential to deliver impressive performance and scalability. The better you understand how it works, the more you can squeeze out of it. But before you squeeze, make sure you know what to monitor! Watch our experienced Postgres developer work through monitoring and performance strategies that help him understand what mistakes he’s made moving to NoSQL. And learn with him as our database performance expert offers friendly guidance on how to use monitoring and performance tuning to get his sample Rust application on the right track. This webinar focuses on using monitoring and performance tuning to discover and correct mistakes that commonly occur when developers move from SQL to NoSQL. For example: - Common issues getting up and running with the monitoring stack - Using the CQL optimizations dashboard - Common issues causing high latency in a node - Common issues causing replica imbalance - What a healthy system looks like in terms of memory - Key metrics to keep an eye on This isn’t “Death-by-Powerpoint.” We’ll walk through problems encountered while migrating a real application from Postgres to ScyllaDB – and try to fix them live as well.
