 Having the functional ability to foster
collaboration will always be important even as
the tools that let you do this change.
 Unlike the tools themselves, such essential
learning functions are stable.
Once you identify a function you
need, sort through a growing array
of tools and select the ones that
deliver that function best for your
context.

14. Essential Learning Functions
 In groups of 5, examine the assigned
essential learning function of digital tools
that are useful for instruction. Each essential
learning function is described, followed by a
list of specific tools.
 In a creative and collaborative manner, report
back to the large group what you learned
about the function and possible ways to use
digital tools that deliver that function.

25. Thought to Ponder…
 Much has been written recently about the impact of social
networking tools in teaching and learning and how
educators can build on the skills of their students in using
these tools. But if educators only integrate the ability of
students to connect and socialize, deeper points of learning
will be missed.While good teaching and learning rests on
effective relationships, in an active learning community,
those relationships should evolve into actual idea exchange
and knowledge construction.
