Nearly any Internet-connected screen is capable of streaming Netflix content. Sitting on top of a cloud-native microservice architecture, the entire ecosystem generates over 1 trillion events every day to feed critical Netflix systems to monitor service health, to detect fraudulent behaviors, and to improve customer experience. Keystone is the critical piece of Netflix backend infrastructure to ensure massive amount of events are processed in near real time, reliably, at scale, and in face of failures in a cloud-native microservices environment. Turns out, such an embarrassingly parallel stream processing system is not embarrassingly easy to develop and operate, especially given the challenges of unpredictable failures in a cloud-native environment, self-serve multi-tenancy support, and assumptions of maintaining extremely high development/operation agility. This talk will shed light on how we built an elastic, resilient, reactive, and self-healing distributed system in the cloud. Zhenzhong will present * High-level cloud-native microservice based Keystone architecture. * A deep dive on how we built the system based on ideas such as declarative reconciliation, container based immutable deployment, logical workload isolation, and chaos exercise. * Insights into our operation best practices, such as capacity provisioning, delivery semantics, deployment tradeoffs, backpressure management, etc.

As part of this strategic evolution, this talk presents how L&G together with ActiveEon Software and Services was able to replace 2 schedulers (Tibco DataSynapse and IBM AlgoBatch) with ProActive Workflows & Scheduling, and migrate the Solvency application to the Azure Cloud. A key aspect has been the ability to pipeline CPU-intensive tasks with I/O intensive ones. This alone allowed for 10% overall savings in runtime and grid resources, and for the high priority risk reports to be made available to customers 3x faster than the previous solution (16 hours down to 5 hours).

In moving its streaming product to the cloud, Netflix has been able to realize tremendous benefits in scalability, performance, and availability. The biggest benefit came from moving to a service-based architecture, which allowed engineering teams to accelerate their development cycle and innovate more quickly. However, cloud migration was a substantial effort. We mobilized resources across the company over several years, reorganized our engineering and operations teams, developed new security policies, migrated to the DevOps operations model, and even embraced a new product architecture. In this talk, we trace the evolution of the Netflix cloud model, both the successes and the challenges, and present them in a way that’s maximally useful to enterprises considering making the move to the cloud.

At Netflix, we have traditionally approached cloud efficiency from a human standpoint, whether it be in-person meetings with the largest service teams or manually flipping reservations. Over time, we realized that these manual processes are not scalable as the business continues to grow. Most data visualisation solutions today still work on data sources which are stored persistently in a data store, using the so called “data at rest” paradigms. More and more data sources today provide a constant stream of data, from IoT devices to Social Media streams. These data stream publish with high velocity and messages often have to be processed as quick as possible. For the processing and analytics on the data, so called stream processing solutions are available. But these only provide minimal or no visualisation capabilities. One was is to first persist the data into a data store and then use a traditional data visualisation solution to present the data. If latency is not an issue, such a solution might be good enough. An other question is which data store solution is necessary to keep up with the high load on write and read. If it is not an RDBMS but an NoSQL database, then not all traditional visualisation tools might already integrate with the specific data store. An other option is to use a Streaming Visualisation solution. They are specially built for streaming data and often do not support batch data. A much better solution would be to have one tool capable of handling both, batch and streaming data. This talk presents different architecture blueprints for integrating data visualisation into a fast data solution and highlights some of the products available to implement these blueprints.

In their presentation, O’Brien-Scott and Cakici focused on what Enterprise AI is, why it is important, and what it takes to empower organizations to get started on a search-based AI journey and stay on track. The presentation explored the complexities of enterprise search challenges and how IA principles can be leveraged to provide AI solutions through the use of a semantic layer. O’Brien-Scott and Cakici showcased a case study where a taxonomy, an ontology, and a knowledge graph were used to structure content at a healthcare workforce solutions organization, providing personalized content recommendations and increasing content findability.
