Personality – somebody’s set of characteristics
3 Levels of Consciousness
Conscious Mind – current state of awareness
Preconscious Mind–includes all information that you are
not currently aware of but can be recalled.
Unconscious Mind –The unconscious mind exists outside
of awareness at all times
3 Parts of Personality
ID –operates according to pleasure principle
Ego – operates according to reality principle
Super Ego– pushes you to obtain the ego ideal
Defence Mechanisms
Repression – It keeps anxiety-producing thoughts out of
the conscious mind
Denial – Denial involves blocking external events from
awareness/consciousness
Projection– Blaming others of his own mistakes
Displacement - An individual does something as a
substitute of something else.
Regression - It is the movement back in psychological
time when one is faced with stress.
Sublimation - The same as displacement but it’shealthier.
Reaction Formation - It replace an unacceptable wish
with its opposite.
Rationalization - Justifying failure by giving some excuses.
5 Stages of Personality Development
1. Oral Stage (1 y.o)
- Sexual pleasure is on the mouth
2. Anal Stage (1-3 y.o)
- Pleasure site changes from mouth to the anal
region
3. Phallic Stage(3-6 y.o.)
- Pleasure site changes from anal region to the
genitals
4. Latency Stage (6-12 y.o.)
- Child socializes and turns its attention outward
and forms relationship with others.
5. Genital Stage (12-18 y.o.)
- Interested on sexual intercourse.
