pasaban.
Mi querida Jannette sintió dolor y empezó a llorar.

No me halagues, Por favor.

One-act play.
Edmundo, a young man of 35, sitting in a blue armchair caressing his cat,
next to a small table with a bottle of whiskey, half full. Him holding a glass
of whiskey drinking on a dark night and pondering the following:
Edmundo: (Shakes the glass of whiskey, looking at him, while with the
other hand he strokes his cat) I'm not bad, but I have to look bad. This is
no life for a man like me. I no longer accept visits, for fear of losing my
only companion Mico (looks at the cat) I fell in love with you fifteen years
ago and you are already in your last days, although you have been long-
lived, sorry for keeping you locked up in this apartment, next to me, all
these years and not wanting to show you another life than my miserable
life.
(Puts the glass on the table and hugs the cat) It's just that your pampering
and flattery are the only ones I can receive without causing me pain and
sorrow.
(Leaves the cat lying on the couch and picks up his glass of whiskey again,
takes a little and pours himself more)
Edmundo: 20 years ago, he had a girlfriend who was a cheerful and happy
girl who lived in the world of her dreams and fantasies, she thought about
studying, traveling the world. Enjoying family and having children who
later give her grandchildren and even great-grandchildren, she loved life
and thought that she wanted to be long-lived to see everyone grow up
and be happy as she was.
Jannette, is that happy girl who would hang out with her friends
distracting herself from her because she was a teenager, if she was 15
years old, the same age as me back then and we thought that youth
would last a lifetime and our smile too.
But something happened, she began to wither like a flower that loses its
brightness and color. Her parents didn't know why, they didn't
understand that sudden change. I didn't understand it either and our love
8. 8
became daily and emotionless. (Edmundo, picks up the cat again and sits
on the couch)
They took her to doctors, she was physically fine, so they tried
psychologists and found the problem.
Something that should cheer her up was making her feel sad and
heartbroken.
What she was? When people spoke ill of her, Jannette didn't even notice
her. But when they began to flatter her, wherever she was, she began to
cry inconsolably and she felt very sad, her depression was so great that
they went to the psychiatrist and he prescribed an antidepressant. She
didn't know what was causing her to cry so she couldn't control it, she was
the girl who couldn't receive praise.
This caused her a big problem, because she began to grow up, and from
how cheerful and happy she used to be, she began to become withered
and bitter, they began to not flatter her but rather to speak ill of her for
not being the same as before.
We were together for 10 years, until I turned 25 and we got used to doing
things wrong instead of right.
I loved her very much, she was my first love and I didn't want to see her
suffer, every time someone flattered her, she suffered, she withdrew and
she was in a sea of tears, the bad thing was that her tears weren't from
happiness. She said that she felt pain as if someone stabbed her with a
knife. She began to think that everyone did not love her, that they spoke
well, because in reality they were hypocrites, she distrusted people.
(Edmundo stands up again and looks directly at the audience)
So I said: Jannette and if we try making you misbehave so that people
don't flatter you anymore.
IF someone called her pretty, she would bristle, she would tell him: the rat
in your house is pretty. Then they called her spoiled and her pain and her
crying passed.
So I started to help her to behave badly, and we pretended together that
we were bad.
One day, she found a small puppy and wanted to take it home, so there
were people who said: What pretty girl is going to adopt the abandoned
puppy, she is a good person?
My dear Jannette felt pain and began to cry. With great pain I had to take
the puppy from her and throw it away from her, she began to get wet
9. 9
from the rain and to mix in the mud. So, they yelled at us evil, you are
terrible people, get out. Jannette and I left, I actually felt bad for the
puppy and for Jannette. She wanted to do something good, but she
couldn't, my act wasn't the best, but she stopped crying and her suffering
stopped.
When I was 24 years old, a friend told me: You always think of living like
this with Jannette, doing things you don't like and suffering with her.
I wonder: what will be your future? Do you plan to marry her?
She can't resist a compliment, imagine if they have a child, and if she
inherits the same disease, you will be doubly unhappy.
I didn't want to hear it, but doubt had already been planted in me.
I had gotten used to being mean not to her, but in her presence with
others and even more so if I heard a compliment towards her.
One day I couldn't take care of her, it was when we were already 25 years
old.
She was beautiful, slim, but gray in her eyes. And dark in her dress, she
loathed herself for showing what she wasn't to avoid flattery.
One day, we left the city, and someone in the middle of the street
stabbed her. And he spat on her, said: So that you remember everything!
or the bad thing you did here is paid baby!
Jannette only told me: The knife in my heart caused the same pain I feel
every time I am flattered, I don't think I feel any more pain, please,
Edmundo, tell me why you have been with me all this time and I replied: I
love you, Jannette And I didn't know what else to say.
On that deserted street, she screamed for help, no one helped us, and I
had helped her get away from good people. There was a strong sun. (The
environment where Edmundo is is illuminated more)
She died, and Mico arrived after a few months, who meowed and
caressed my leg in the middle of the rain on the street, he was a small
kitten at the time, he would have been 1 month old, the vet told me.
The vet wanted to flatter my protective attitude towards Mico, but I told
him Don't flatter me, please.
Today marks the 10th anniversary of Jannette's death, and I will not
return to this neighborhood. With Mico I learned that there is another
opportunity, I can't let life go by, and that my loves leave me here.
I want to be myself and enjoy, somehow forgive myself, and forgive life
10. 10
for what it put us through, I want to show that I can be good to others,
start over, maybe meet someone else
that she can give me her love, I will never forget Jannette, but today I
realized that they want me alive, life wants me alive, if I have been a dog,
now I will be a loving and happy panda bear as my Jannette was when we
just met we met, radiant, smiling and happy. (Edmundo extends his arm
with the full glass of whiskey in his hand). Here's to Jannette and Mico,
cheers!!! But don't flatter me, please.
