2. Gamma Knife
• The Gamma Knife is an advanced
radiation treatment for adults and
children.
• It is done only for tumors and other
medical problems of the head.
• It is a machine that delivers a single,
finely focused, high dose of radiation to
its target, while causing little or no
damage to surrounding tissue.
• It is a minimally invasive technique.
3. Gamma Knife used to Treat
• Small to medium brain tumors
• Abnormal blood vessel formations called arteriovenous
malformations
• Epilepsy
• Trigeminal neuralgia (a nerve condition that causes chronic pain,
and other neurological conditions).
• Abnormalities measuring less than 3 centimeters, or 1 inch in
diameter, can be treated with the Gamma Knife.
• Acoustic neuroma (a noncancerous tumor in the brain that
affects the nerves that control hearing).
4. Factors Considered for Gamma
Knife
• Age
• General medical condition
• Location and size of the
brain abnormality
• Previous treatments
5. Why choose Gamma Knife?
• It is the latest advancement in noninvasive radiosurgery
treatment of tumors and abnormalities in the brain.
• Gamma Knife radiosurgery results in minimal damage to
healthy tissues surrounding the target.
• Low risk of side effects.
• Gamma Knife radiosurgery is often a safer option than is
traditional brain surgery.
• One-time therapy completed in a single day.
6. • It removes the physical trauma and the majority of risks
associated with conventional surgery.
• It may be used as an alternative to standard neurosurgical
operations or as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment.
• No surgical incision is required.

7. How does Gamma Knife
radiosurgery work?
• Radiosurgery works in the same manner as other types of therapeutic
radiology. It destroys the DNA of tumor cells, causing them to be unable to
reproduce and grow.
Steps involves in Gamma Knife treatment :
• Head Frame Placement - In order to keep the head from moving during
treatment, a box-shaped frame is attached to the head. Pins designed
specifically for this purpose fasten the head frame to the skull. The head
frame also is a guide to focus the gamma ray beams to the exact location of
the lesion being treated.
8. • Tumor Or Lesion Location Imagine - Once the head frame is in
place, the exact location of the lesion to be treated will be determined
using computed tomography (CT scan) or magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI).
• Radiation Dose Planning - After the CT or MRI scan has been
completed, the radiation therapy team will determine the treatment
plan. The results of the imaging scan, along with other information,
will be used by a medical physicist to determine the best treatment.
9. • Radiation Treatment - After being positioned for the treatment, a
type of helmet with many hundreds of holes in it is placed over the
head frame. These holes help to focus the radiation beams on the
target. Treatment will last a few minutes up to a few hours,
depending on the type and location of the area being treated.
Generally, only one treatment session is required for a lesion.
