2. The Quest:
Your first administrative position will be the most difficult to obtain
You may feel that you are ready, but you may not be chosen on
your first interview
Keep the faith and bloom where you are planted
3. Do Your Homework in Advance!
Know district vision, mission, etc…..
Know District initiatives
Know school and district data
Prepare to share how your personal leadership training
will meet the needs of the district or school
4. Before the Interview Begins:
Dress professionally
Be early. Talk with the secretary or custodian -- they know all
about the school
When you enter the room, move to and greet each member
of the interview committee
5. Before the interview:
Do your research and practice your answers
Bring all the materials you will need including a notebook
to jot notes
Be sure all electronic devices are off and put away
6. Does your Resume Speak Before You Do?
Make sure your resume is in a user friendly formats but also
separates you from the stack
Highlight achievements that you can personally speak to
Use quality paper
Use current contacts/references
Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
7. About those references…........................
Be sure to confirm with individuals you are considering to be
your references BEFORE you put their name on any resume or
reference form
Give references updates about yourself so that they can
relay current information
Understand that most employers will contact supervisors from
your last place of employment even if you do not list them
8. What does social media reveal about you?
Take a personal Social Media Inventory
Google, Bing, and others advance by “hits”
Applicant hunters read your life on Social Media
Do you have a PLN? Are you a connected educator?
9. During the interview:
Be present and in the moment
Sit up – display confidence
Be honest -Just the facts
Answer the questions

Don’t go on and on, but do sell yourself as the best candidate
Think before you answer a question. And confine your
response to the question asked. Be succinct and thorough
Reference Your Experiences – do not expect your resume to
speak for itself
If you are going to present a portfolio……….make sure it’s
great
12. During the interview:
Share real stories and experiences
Tell about your special skills
Show knowledge of your curriculum expertise
Show your knowledge of data and accountability

Loss of a student or parent
4-day snow day, earthquake, or
displacement caused by flood
Unexpected volunteer
cancellation for major event
School teacher scandal
Supporting firing a colleague

14. Tips!
When answering a question, look at all members of the
interview committee, not just the person who asked the
question
Prepare a short series of questions that pertain to the
interests of each person on the committee
Be sure to thank the committee for the time and
opportunity to interview
15. Tips!
Prepare a brief summary statement that emphasizes how you
plan to work collaboratively with teachers and parents to
improve the school
Ask for a tour of the building -- especially if classes are in
session
Follow up with an email to the interviewers. Highlight the
positives of the interview and express your continued interest
in the position
16. As the interview ends……………
Offer to leave or send samples of your work – be aware –
don’t pass off someone else’s work as your own
Compliment the campus or district on initiatives you have
read about
Ask questions about progress in the district
Show how you would be an integral part of the team
17. After the interview:
Handshakes, Thank yous and appreciations are a must.
Follow up with handwritten or email thank you
Prepare for Phase II interview process if selected
Learn something from every interview experience even if you
are selected
18. The Second Interview:
Congratulate yourself on making it past the first phase
Realize that now there will be an even more in depth look into
your talents and strengths
Be ready to speak about accomplishments of your past with
teams, but be sure to be able to articulate what
achievements you were personally responsible for
19. I was qualified for that job!
Why didn’t I get the position?
Your qualifications aren’t as strong as you think they are
or someone else’s are stronger. Your assessment of your
skills isn’t in line with the reality of the situation
You don’t have an accurate understanding of what the
job is all about, and therefore your opinion of how well-
matched you are is based on an erroneous foundation
You’re well qualified, but you have some other
characteristic that is not a best fit for the position at this
time

Remain humble
Recognize the responsibility
Commit to meet the challenge
Understand the real work that is about to begin
