The Quest:
Your first administrative position will be the most difficult to obtain
You may feel that you are ready, but you may not be chosen on
your first interview
Keep the faith and bloom where you are planted
Do Your Homework in Advance!
 Know district vision, mission, etc…..
 Know District initiatives
 Know school and district data
 Prepare to share how your personal leadership training
will meet the needs of the district or school
Before the Interview Begins:
 Dress professionally
 Be early. Talk with the secretary or custodian -- they know all
about the school
 When you enter the room, move to and greet each member
of the interview committee
Before the interview:
 Do your research and practice your answers
 Bring all the materials you will need including a notebook
to jot notes
 Be sure all electronic devices are off and put away
Does your Resume Speak Before You Do?
 Make sure your resume is in a user friendly formats but also
separates you from the stack
 Highlight achievements that you can personally speak to
 Use quality paper
 Use current contacts/references
 Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
About those references…........................
 Be sure to confirm with individuals you are considering to be
your references BEFORE you put their name on any resume or
reference form
 Give references updates about yourself so that they can
relay current information
 Understand that most employers will contact supervisors from
your last place of employment even if you do not list them
What does social media reveal about you?
 Take a personal Social Media Inventory
 Google, Bing, and others advance by “hits”
 Applicant hunters read your life on Social Media
 Do you have a PLN? Are you a connected educator?
During the interview:
 Be present and in the moment
 Sit up – display confidence
 Be honest -Just the facts
 Answer the questions
Activity #1
The 4 Most Important Words
 KNOW YOURSELF
 BE YOURSELF
During the interview:
 Don’t go on and on, but do sell yourself as the best candidate
 Think before you answer a question. And confine your
response to the question asked. Be succinct and thorough
 Reference Your Experiences – do not expect your resume to
speak for itself
 If you are going to present a portfolio……….make sure it’s
great
During the interview:
 Share real stories and experiences
 Tell about your special skills
 Show knowledge of your curriculum expertise
 Show your knowledge of data and accountability
Activity #2
Unexpected scenario questions:
 The leaking school toilet
 Loss of a student or parent
 4-day snow day, earthquake, or
displacement caused by flood
 Unexpected volunteer
cancellation for major event
 School teacher scandal
 Supporting firing a colleague
 Missing student
 Breakdown of school bus on a
field trip
 Hours and days or power outages
 Helicopter parents
 Schoolwide health alert
 Sudden enrollment drop
 Overnight storm damage
 Mandatory reporting to
authorities
Tips!
 When answering a question, look at all members of the
interview committee, not just the person who asked the
question
 Prepare a short series of questions that pertain to the
interests of each person on the committee
 Be sure to thank the committee for the time and
opportunity to interview
Tips!
 Prepare a brief summary statement that emphasizes how you
plan to work collaboratively with teachers and parents to
improve the school
 Ask for a tour of the building -- especially if classes are in
session
 Follow up with an email to the interviewers. Highlight the
positives of the interview and express your continued interest
in the position
As the interview ends……………
 Offer to leave or send samples of your work – be aware –
don’t pass off someone else’s work as your own
 Compliment the campus or district on initiatives you have
read about
 Ask questions about progress in the district
 Show how you would be an integral part of the team
After the interview:
 Handshakes, Thank yous and appreciations are a must.
Follow up with handwritten or email thank you
 Prepare for Phase II interview process if selected
 Learn something from every interview experience even if you
are selected
The Second Interview:
 Congratulate yourself on making it past the first phase
 Realize that now there will be an even more in depth look into
your talents and strengths
 Be ready to speak about accomplishments of your past with
teams, but be sure to be able to articulate what
achievements you were personally responsible for
I was qualified for that job!
Why didn’t I get the position?
 Your qualifications aren’t as strong as you think they are
or someone else’s are stronger. Your assessment of your
skills isn’t in line with the reality of the situation
 You don’t have an accurate understanding of what the
job is all about, and therefore your opinion of how well-
matched you are is based on an erroneous foundation
 You’re well qualified, but you have some other
characteristic that is not a best fit for the position at this
time
Congrats! You Got the Job!
 Remain humble
 Recognize the responsibility
 Commit to meet the challenge
 Understand the real work that is about to begin
Questions?
Thanks for attending!
