HCI has always focused on designing useful and usable interactive systems, but usability has dominated the field while research on usefulness has been largely absent. With user experience (UX) emerging as a dominant paradigm, it is necessary to consider the meaning of usefulness for modern computing contexts. This paper describes the results of an exploratory study of usefulness and its relation to contextual and experiential factors. The results show that a system’s usefulness is shaped by the context in which it is used, usability is closely linked to usefulness, usefulness may have both pragmatic and hedonic attributes, and usefulness is critical in defining users’ overall evaluation of a system (i.e., its goodness). We conclude by discussing the implications of this research and describing plans for extending our understanding of usefulness in other settings. Paper presented at the 2014 ACM Conference on Designing Interactive Systems (DIS 2014).

Theo Mandel, Ph.D. was invited to give this presentation at the IUE 2013 conference, Phoenix, AZ on April 3, 2013. Object-oriented design is a critical skill for today's user experience designers. "Designing Object-Oriented User Experiences" is a new presentation based on 20 years of research and experience in object-oriented user interface design. Mandel was part of the IBM Common User Access (CUA) team that designed the object-oriented OS/2 operating system interface. The IBM team wrote and published the first industry object-oriented design guide, titled "Object-Oriented Interface Design: IBM Common User Access Guidelines" (Que, 1992). OOUIs are described in Mandel's well-known book, "The Elements of User Interface Design" (John Wiley & Sons, 1997). The presentation describes the history of OOUIs, what is isn't, what it is, design models and the OO UX process. Resources are provided. User Experience is more than just a buzzword; it is a design philosophy that puts “users” at the center and recognizes that providing them with opportunities for enjoyment is just as important (if not more) than eliminating pain and frustration in their interactions with interfaces (both digital and analog). By de-constructing the cognitive and emotional dimensions of UX and tracing how UX has evolved from its historical roots in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) discipline to its present-day application across multiple domains and industries (including Library and Information Science), this talk will inspire information professionals and their organizations to take a more UX-centric approach to the design and/or evaluation of their technologies, services, and spaces.

Conference presented at the UX Strat Europe 2016 conference in Amsterdam by Dr. Carine Lallemand (University of Luxembourg). Abstract: While conducting UX research, we make several conclusions that will in turn provide the foundation for our UX strategy. But what if these inferences happen to be wrong, based on invalid findings and false beliefs? How critically would this impact your organization and projects? How can you safeguard a UX strategy by ensuring the quality of research conclusions? There might be numerous threats to validity in UX research, some of which might depend on the method used or the way it is used. A method is only a guide to action that needs to be configured, adapted, and complemented to match specific project requirements. To be successful, it is essential to ensure validity in strategic UX research methods. Failing to do so is taking the risk to base strategic decisions on false beliefs. In this talk, we will therefore see how to tackle validity issues and make the most out of UX research to stand out from the crowd by delivering value and differentiation. Through the presentation of validated cutting edge UX methods and business cases, you will be able to spot opportunities for improvement in your UX strategy!

Studies show that online museum collections are among the least popular features of a museum website, which many museums attribute to a lack of interest. While it’s certainly possible that a large segment of the population is simply uninterested in viewing museum objects through a computer screen, it is also possible that a large number of people want to find and view museum objects digitally but have been discouraged from doing so due to the poor user experience (UX) of existing online-collection interfaces. This paper describes the creation and validation of a UX assessment rubric for online museum collections. Consisting of ten factors, the rubric was developed iteratively through in-depth examinations of several existing museum-collection interfaces. To validate the rubric and test its reliability and utility, an experiment was conducted in which two UX professionals and two museum professionals were asked to apply the rubric to three online museum collections and then provide their feedback on the rubric and its use as an assessment tool. This paper presents the results of this validation study, as well as museum-specific results derived from applying the rubric. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the rubric may be used to improve the UX of museum-collection interfaces and future research directions aimed at strengthening and refining the rubric for use by museum professionals. Presented at the 2015 Museums and the Web conference in Chicago IL.

You want the most out of your investment in SharePoint – a highly adopted, effective and easy-to-use solution. Achieving these objectives requires more than technical skills and knowledge of the inner-workings of SharePoint features – it requires an understanding of user problems and goals as well as a process that keeps the user at the center of the lifecycle. If you are like many organizations implementing SharePoint, you are using “surrogates” to represent user requirements, collecting inadequate user information and not engaging users later in the design and development process. If this sounds familiar, you may be headed toward a costly redesign. This session defines both User Centered Design (UCD) and User Experience (UX) concepts and provides tangible methods that incorporate users into your process without compromising business goals.

1 User Interface Development User Interface Development Shashank Pitla Wilmington University Iteration 1 – Develop a storyboard Plan Nowadays, as the technology and the Web are continually being used to perform various operations, it becomes paramount to have an interactive and attractive user interface (Molina, Redondo, & Ortega, 2009). That is because humans interact with these systems through an interface. This iteration entails storyboarding for the user interface. A storyboard is a technique used for illustrating the interaction between humans and products in a narrative format that incorporates a series of sketches, drawings, pictures, and words to tell a story (Gruen, 2000). In this iteration, I plan to create storyboards that specify how the user interface will be changing in reaction to the user’s actions as well as to show the external elements to the system. I plan to use as few details as possible to get the key points on board regarding the big picture because the storyboard is supposed to present clear and precise information of the user interface. In the procedure for storyboard design, there are three major activities that I plan to carry out including deciding what to incorporate, building the storyboard, and lastly feedback and iteration. In deciding what to do, I plan to interact with some users in the company to understand their needs, goals, and background. This analysis will also aid in understanding the system and the features. I will also get to brainstorm with the design team, identify people and artifacts in this storyboard and then develop the storyboard scenarios. During the time for building the storyboard, I will put the gathered information concerning the storyboard features into practice and illustrate the user actions on the storyboard. During the last step in my procedure; feedback and iteration, I plan to gather feedback from the internal and external stakeholders and then iterate the storyboard design. Action The documenting of the iteration’s objectives was the first activity that was carried out before commencing the main activities of the session. I then began with the first step of my procedure that is, deciding what to include. To accomplish that, I had to interact with the users with the aim of understanding their backgrounds and goals, and to understand the system better in terms of the desired features. I also brainstormed with the design team about the storyboard before developing the storyboard scenarios. In the second step, I broke the story into smaller sections known as frames; I identified the key frames from the scenarios as I focus on each frame’s individual features. In each frame, I had to draw the user, the product as well as other fundamental objects for each frame. I used tests for the users’ thoughts or reactions and made sure to use as minimum detail as possible in communicating the user interface features. I then wrote short descriptions for each frame to ...

On our current trajectory, the future of UX design will look much like the present, only worse. The gold rush mentality towards UX design as a “career” combined with Gresham’s Law (“bad money drives out good”) applied to design combined with automation from software platforms means we are increasing the pace at which bad designs proliferate. In this talk Joshua Randall will cite data from larger research companies like Baymard and Nielsen Norman Group as well as draw on examples from his career to paint a picture of the coming dystopia.

There are key things that will give you a much better chance at success. While these are well documented in numerous books, articles, and videos - there are still many stakeholders that don't subscribe to some basic truths, like: product decisions should be based on evidence, or having dedicated UX Designers on product teams. Jeremy will go over his top ten questions to ask any team to see if they're heading toward launching a great product experience. This presentation was originally given @ Refresh Dallas on 2/12/15
