4. The Importance of Learning, Cont'd
The speed of change is accelerating, driven in part by (exponential)
technologies and growing competition — "VUCA* world"
Today, LEARNING — and learning to learn and unlearn — is a key
to keeping up and staying relevant
"The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be the
only sustainable competitive advantage"

Rethinking and Redesigning Finnish Education
https://brightside.me/wonder-curiosities/finland-will-become-the-first-country-in-the-world-to-get-rid-of-all-
school-subjects-259910/
Finland: Worldwide leader in education—ranking on or near top of
annual PISA rankings—yet country is not resting on its laurels
Finnish officials want to remove school subjects from the curriculum. There will
no longer be any classes in physics, math, literature, history, or geography.
Instead of individual subjects, students will study events and phenomena in an
interdisciplinary format
The general idea is that the students ought to choose for themselves which
topic or phenomenon they want to study, bearing in mind their ambitions for
the future and their capabilities
Shows innovative thinking and "Out-of-box Thinking" and recognizing needs
for future — What could Oslo do around Smart City Learning?

US Examples of Change Leaders: K-12
Design Tech High School: Oracle Education Foundation +
San Mateo County Office of Education. Oracle is
providing the space free of charge and funding the
school’s construction. "Extreme personalization" of
coursework and focus on "actionable learning" and
giving students workplace insight and experience.
Super School Projects by XQ Institute: Funding in part by Steve Job's widow. Funding 10
innovative schools that won competition for $10 million each to experiment ("Rethinking
High School") with building "Super Schools."

Issue: When will we have "instructional designers" who can take advantage of VR affordances
and design and build learning activities in 3D immersive environments, especially learning
experiences that cannot be achieved as easily or cost-effectively, if at all, in the physical world
