Anouk Wipprecht is a FashionTech designer who works interdisciplinary in search for intelligent systems that interact with the body as the environment of the wearer. Wipprecht uses machine learning and biomimicry coupled to sensors and animatronics. Her designs move, breath, and react to the world around them. She is interested in new ways we can interface — and builds micro-controlled garments to provoke her generation. At any given moment it is easy to look back to see how technology has changed over time. At the same time it is difficult to see what transformations are taking place in current moment, and even more difficult to see where things are going. In the late 19th century a revolution in science took off. It was easy to see the vast number of inventions and entrepreneurial spirit of the time. At the dawn of the 20th century, it seems that everything had been invented. Yet, in the 20th century we saw more innovations and more technologically advanced than in all history of mankind before that. Never in history have we seen such dramatic changes in the way people live and work. In this lecture we explore what to make of technology. We define the term we will use in the course. Terms defined are technology, product performance, and innovation to name few.

Presentation for Canadian startup company Eventmobi (http://www.eventmobi.com/). They are visiting Iceland this september 2014 and are located in Reykavík University. This presentation introduced some startups including my own, Betware which is not so much of a startup any more. I also introduce three companies that are members of the Icelandic gaming industry (IGI), CCP makers of the successful EVEOnline, Plain Vanilla markers of the rocket growth game Quizup and finally Skema Education which is about teaching programming to kids. The clip shown is from founder Rakel Sölvadóttir's TEDx lecture. Then I talk about my work at RU and in particular some concepts from my New Technology course on technology trends. Which explains the title of the presentation.

In the fifties, in many western countries hobby clubs emerged, that shared tools and knowledge. In the eighties, the same happened with computer clubs, sharing a matrix printer or a telephone modem. Now they have a new successor: MILK (made-in-Limerick) labs, Happy Lab Vienna, Protospace Utrecht, Buda Lab Kortrijk, and more generically the Fab Labs, Maker spaces, repair cafés, and hacker spaces. They all focus on making, learning, sharing and empowering. The popularity of the maker concept has its impact on more and more educational institutes. To motivate their students, to improve their STE(A)M education, many school organise tours to the nearest Fab Lab, promote project activities there or set-up their own Fab Lab embedded in their school. In fact, it is a new trend in social constructivism. We will shortly introduce you to this new world and reflect on its opportunities and threats for Moodle.

There is a philosophical tension in outdoor education about the role of technology. On one hand, outdoor educators seek to distance participants from technology in order to provide “a place apart”. On the other hand, most outdoor education programs rely on a growing plethora of outdoor and safety gear, electronic navigation and communication, and transport technologies. Despite this, outdoor education tends to be somewhat unadventurous in its pedagogical use of technology. Instead, we might experiment with a wider spectrum of technologies (from low tech to high tech). By considering possibilities from across the technological gamut – e.g., from survival programs (low tech) to urban challenges with mobile electronic devices (high tech) – we might enrich our understanding of outdoor learning processes and engage different types of participants.

Events are encapsulated pieces of information that flow from one event agent to another. In order to process an event, additional information that is external to the event is often needed. This is achieved using a process called event enrichment. Current approaches to event enrichment are external to event processing engines and are handled by specialized agents. Within large-scale environments with high heterogeneity among events, the enrichment process may become difficult to maintain. This paper examines event enrichment in terms of information completeness and presents a unified model for event enrichment that takes place natively within the event processing engine. The paper describes the requirements of event enrichment and highlights its challenges such as finding enrichment sources, retrieval of information items, finding complementary information and its fusion with events. It then details an instantiation of the model using Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies. Enrichment is realised by dynamically guiding a spreading activation algorithm in a Linked Data graph. Multiple spreading activation strategies have been evaluated on a set of Wikipedia events and experimentation shows the viability of the approach.

The Internet of Things ..in your classroom IoT incorporates many technologies familiar to scientists. Data logging, robotics, feedback and control systems/remote control vehicles/helicopters. This session will investigate through examples of readily available devices technologies of enhance scientific understanding. Wearables and nearables are becoming readily available. These personal devices use low energy smartbluetooth to initiate contact, then use wifi to contact web services. Smart Bluetooth (BTLE) beacon technologies will be examined through education examples and potential to be readily adopted in schools and classrooms.
