We are excited to be holding our own GIS Day event on November 19th, 2014! GIS Day is a global grassroots educational event that enables Geographic Information Systems (GIS) users and vendors to showcase real-world applications of GIS to schools, businesses, and the general public. Organizations that utilize GIS around the world participate by holding or sponsoring an event of their own. The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. In 2005, more than 700 GIS Day events were held in 74 countries around the globe. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with inspiring the creation of GIS Day. He saw GIS Day as providing an opportunity for the world to learn about the uses of GIS in mapping geography, and what that mapping technology could provide. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate. Recognizing the power that GIS technology could provide for healthcare, eHealth Africa as an NGO organization stepped to the forefront of using GIS applications to track polio in Nigeria. Using GIS technology, eHealth is able to map out areas previously unreached during immunization campaigns. Once the area is mapped, much-needed polio vaccinations are able to be distributed and the polio epidemic is brought another step closer to being controlled and eliminated. The theme of GIS Day is “Discovering the world through GIS.” GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society and around the world. We are excited to take part in GIS Day 2014 on November 19th. We look forward to joining with our community partners in discussing GIS usage, and to take a close look at the exciting contributions GIS provides around our world.

The open data movement has grown exponentially in a relatively short period of time. Many countries and cities have been rolling out initiatives and embracing the potential value that comes with opening up their data. However, as much as open data holds great promise, there is a real danger of initiatives failing. Speaking at this year’s Canadian Open Data Summit (http://www.opendatasummit.ca/), Open Insitute’s Executive Director Jay Bhalla gives a global perspective of lessons learned through a journey of implementing and building open data ecosystems from around the world. http://openinstitute.com/open-data-delusion/

The convergence of large-scale annotated datasets and affordable GPU hardware has allowed the training of neural networks for data analysis tasks which were previously addressed with hand-crafted features. Architectures such as convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks or Q-nets for reinforcement learning have shaped a brand new scenario in signal processing. This course will cover the basic principles of deep learning from both an algorithmic and computational perspectives.

Deep learning is likely to have a big impact on business. McKinsey predicts that AI and robotics will create $50 trillion of value over the next 10 years. Over $1 billion of venture investment has gone to 250 deep learning startups over the past year. Deep learning systems have recently broken records in speech recognition, image recognition, image captioning, translation, drug discovery and other tasks. Why is this happening now and how is it likely to play out? We review the development of AI and the pendulum swings between the "neats" and the "scruffies". We describe traditional approaches to semantics through logics and grammars and the new deep learning vector semantics. We relate it to Roger Shepard's cognitive geometry and the structure of biological networks. We also describe limitations of deep learning for safety and regulation. We show how it fits into the rational agent framework and discuss what the next steps may be.

Edge AI and Human Augmentation are two major technology trends, driven by recent advancements in edge computing, IoT, and AI accelerators. As humans, things, and AI continue to grow closer together, systems engineers and researchers are faced with new and unique challenges. In this paper, we analyze the role of edge computing and AI in the cyber-human evolution, and identify challenges that edge computing systems will consequently be faced with. We take a closer look at how a cyber-physical fabric will be complemented by AI operationalization to enable seamless end-to-end edge intelligence systems.
