9. Step 1: Separate your clothes
Preparation is an important step in washing your clothes.
The first step is to separate your dirty clothes accordingly.
The way to separate is by color. If you can sort your clothes,
you're already on the path to success.
10. Step 2: How to separate your clothes
The most basic and fool-proof formula to use for separating
clothes is to sort into four distinct piles: whites, lights,
darks, and delicates.
11. Whites
Whites: Think basic t-shirts, white socks and undies, sheets,
pillowcases, and all the other plain white clothing or linens that
you own.
13. Darks
Darks: Dark socks, dark underwear and shirts, along with jeans
and dark-colored pants.
14. Delicates
Delicates: Wool garments, sweaters, satin, or any or different
fabrics. These are mostly dress clothes. Ask myself or your mom
if you are unsure if a clothing item fits into this category.
15. Step 3: Empty Your Pockets
Empty all of the pockets of pens, money, and anything else.
You do not want these items going through the wash!
16. Step 4: Wash
The actual act of washing clothes is simple. After you've
gathered all of your materials and done the proper sorting,
you're ready throw the clothes into the machine. Here are
some tips:
17. Stains!
First you must pre-treat any visible stains before
washing for maximum effectiveness of removal.
Add a dime-size amount of shout to the stain.
Then you can add it in the washing machine and
hope that the stain comes out in the washing
cycle.
18. Step 5: Detergent
The bottle has the measurement of how much you should put
into your washing machine. The correct amount for your
machine is:
19. Step 6: Temperature
Whites require a "hot" cycle. The hot water gets your whites nice
and clean, because it doesn't have to worry about draining out
colors
20. Temperature Continued
Lights and darks: For these clothes, use a "warm" or
"permanent press" cycle which has a more mild cycle and adds an
extra cool water rinse. The cool water protects the colors.
22. Step 7: Add Clothes
You should never have to stuff clothes into a washer… if
there's no room inside for more clothes, then there's no
room inside for water to reach grimy places. So never fill a
washer more than about ½ - ¾ full.
25. Step 8: Move the clothes to the dryer
Once your clothes have finished the washing cycle, clean
the lint filter of your dryer and then move the clothes over
to the dryer.
26. Step 9: Choose the right settings
Choose the setting that you want to use. Depending on the load, you
can have the clothes on timed dry or on a setting like “delicates” or
“whites”
27. Step 10: Fold
You're not done yet. As lame as it sounds, you must fold your
laundry. Take the clothes back to your room using the hamper and
fold them properly. Hang up items which need to be hung.
