Solar Energy in the 21st Century
1.
2. Garret Erskine, the chief executive officer of
Abraxas Medical Solutions in Irvine, California, has
played a part in the growing solar power industry.
Working in his off hours, Garret Erskine patented a
skylight solar reflective system, the SkyLiter, which
can transfer sunlight into room or office lighting and
reduces the demand for outside electricity during
peak usage hours.
Present and future applications of solar power
abound. The International Space Station, for
instance, deploys some 32,800 solar cells in
gigantic “wings.”
3. These winged cells also provide power for
experimental aircraft that can fly at an elevation
of 18 miles.
In years to come, buildings will generate
enough solar and other renewable power to
become energy self-sufficient, and advances in
capturing solar activity could make it possible
for automobiles and even clothing to collect sun
power. As a result, renewable energy prices
could eventually match those of traditional
energy.
