2. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech and the March on
Washington
August 28, 1963: More than 200,000 people gathered around the Lincoln
Memorial in Washington DC, where the historic “March on Washington
for Jobs and Freedom” culminated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I
Have A Dream’ speech. King said the march was “the greatest
demonstration of freedom in the history of the United States.” The mass
demonstration led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
