Knowledge produced in the public sector has been found to be an important ingredient of economic growth and technological progress. Close links to academic research have further been shown to be beneficial for innovation performance of the individual firm. As there are many different channels through which academic science reaches the private sector, most prominently licensing contracts, joint research and academic consulting, it is important for the decision making of policy makers and managers to assess their effectiveness. Most of the existing research has focused on formal university technology transfer mechanisms, i.e. those that embody or directly lead to a legal instrument like a patent, license or royalty agreement. Only a few authors have investigated informal university technology transfer mechanisms. Informal technology transfer focuses on non-contractual interactions of the agents involved, i.e. on university scientists and industry personnel. Research suggests that formal and informal technology transfer may go well together in that informal contacts improve the quality of a formal relationship or that formal contracts are accompanied by an informal relation of mutual exchange on technology-related aspects. In this paper, we analyze whether these activities are mutually reinforcing, i.e. complementary. Our analysis is based on a comprehensive dataset of more than 2,000 German manufacturing firms. We perform direct and indirect tests for the complementarity of formal and informal technology transfer. Our results confirm a complementary relationship: using both transfer channels contributes to higher innovation performance. The management of the firm should therefore strive to maintain close informal relationships with universities to realize the full potential of formal technology transfer.

In the globalization stage, there has been an increasing interest in the determinants and outcomes of successful technology transfer and commercialization of research results. In this study, An evaluation framework which crosses technology transfer services and research results commercialization in University has been created. We found that research based business idea generation increase at a faster rate for professors with private sector work experience who have more time for research in their positions. The article ends with a discussion of our empirical findings and its implications for support activities related to technology transfer and commercialization of research results. ABSTRACT This paper will describe shortly a new STP concept called 3GSP (Third Generation Science Park), which is gaining momentum in Finland. It explains the fundamental changes in the global innovation environment and explains why the platform thinking is becoming an essential element in ecosystem development. The theoretical background and classifications of platforms are described and the benefits from the STP perspective highlighted. The paper emphasizes especially the role of so called ‘competence platforms’ and explains the main characteristics of a fully working competence platform. The role of competence platforms in understanding serendipity and as a fundamental factor in the team building is highlighted. The paper analyses from STP perspective several practical elements, where platform thinking supports the emergence of new innovation environments, including Urban Mill (Finland) and Meetberlage (Netherlands). The requirements for comprehensive competence platform services are presented and their potential to support community building and therefore ecosystem development is illustrated. This analysis will give the STP practitioners new models of applying the quadruple helix-principles and help in the co-creation, open innovation and serendipity management practises. The case studies, which are presented in the paper, will help the STP management teams to evaluate the benefits of platform thinking in different contexts. This session will address cybernetic genealogies of information theory and systems thinking to see how current ideas around ‘planetary computation’ and ‘artificial intelligence’ draw on much longer and more equivocal histories than is often recognised. 6.Hacking is seen as a paradigmatic form of innovation, but also of political resistance and of contemporary knowledge politics. This paper presents an exploratory study carried out in Catalonia from autumn 2007 until spring 2008, with the aim of bringing the local design and research and innovation systems together. This research work has revealed that the design sector can serve as a vehicle to transfer technology and knowledge produced by the research and innovation system (R&D) to businesses. Designers who follow up activities in research centres, mainly developed at universities or public technology centres, may be eventually interested in adding value to their proposals by taking advantage of the scientific-technical knowledge produced in the R&D system. The field work in this research consisted of organizing a set of focus-group sessions among designers and researchers who shared similar activity sectors.

Der vil være fokus på, hvordan aktiviteten iscenesættes, og indgår i de studerendes forståelse. Det teoretiske afsæt er en tilpasset udvikling af Knorr Cetinas begrebssæt om epistemiske kulturer og epistemiske maskiner. I projektet afdækkes de forskellige professionsuddannelsers forståelses- og handlingsrum i indramning af studieaktivitetsmodellen med henblik på at skabe et videns- og muligt handlingsgrundlag for videre udvikling.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
