Chapter 5 reviews the role of the Internet as a tool for communication.  In making classroom assignments, the teacher needs to know whether or not students have home access to the Internet.  The Internet can provides tools for communication, tools for inquiry, and tools for construction.
The Internet, tool for communication, provides efficient methods for exchanging information and communicating with others.  The chapter describes e-mail, mailing lists, chat, and videoconferencing as well as projects that can be accomplished using these types of software.
Teachers who want to engage students in productive online discussion need to provide technical, social, managerial, and pedagogical roles.  The technical role involves assisting participants with technical problems.  The social role requires the ability to develop and maintain an environment that encourages positive interactions.  The managerial role involves helping learners understand the goals and procedures of the discussion and providing an opportunity for all to participate.  The pedagogical role involves motivating student effort, engaging students in activities that promote learning, and modeling productive discussion behaviors.  All these roles are important if the teacher wants to be successful.
