distinction between assessment evaluation and measurement
1. Presentation:
Distinction between Assessment, Evaluation and Measurement.
Purpose of Assessment
Present by:

Class:
B.Ed. (hons) 4th semester evening
2. Evaluation
Evaluation ( measure the teaching learning process)
Assessment ( Documentation)
Measurement (Data in numerical value)
Test ( Measure skills or knowledge)
3. Define test and measurement:
test may be called as tool, a question, set of question, an examination which is
used to measure a particular characteristics of an or a group of individual.
Test is a form of questioning or measuring tool used to access the status of ones
skill, attitude and fitness.
4. Conti..
Test is an instrument or activity used to accumulate data on persons ability to
performed a specific task.
It is an assessment indented to measure test takers knowledge skill, aptitude
performance or classification in many other topic.
5. Measurement
Measurement is a process of collecting data on attribute of interest.
Measurement is an act or process that involves the assignment of numerical
values to whatever is being tested. So it involves the quantity of something.
6. Kind of test.
Objective test
Subjective test
Individual test
Group test
Unstandardized test
Standardized test
7. Conti…
Objective test is a test paper and pencil test where in students answers can be
compared and quantified to yield a numerical score. This is because it is requires
convergent and specific response.
Subjective test is a paper and pencil test which is not easily quantified as student
are given the freedom to write their answer to question, such as an essay test.
Thus, the answer to this type of test is divergent.
8. Conti….
individual test: it is a test administrated to one student at a time.
Group test: it is one administrated to group of students.
Unstandardized test: it is one prepared by teachers for use in the classroom, with
no established norms for scoring and interpretation of result.
9. Cont...
standardized test: it is a test prepared by an expert or specialist. This
type of test samples behavior under uniform procedure.
10. Purpose of test and measurement.
For getting knowledge about the progress.
For preparation of effective planning.
For knowing abilities and capacities.
For giving motivation.
For knowing the achievement in future.
For research and experimentation.
11. What is assessment.
Assessment is the process of documenting usually in measurable term,
knowledge, skills, attitude and beliefs.
Assessment in education is the process of gathering , interpreting, recording and
using information about pupils response to an educational task.
(Harlen Gips, broad foot, Nuttal, 1992)
12. Types of measurement
Classification is based on function role in classroom instruction
Placement assessment: administered at the beginning of instruction.
Formative assessment: monitor learning progress during instruction.
Diagnostic assessment: diagnose learning difficulties during instruction.
Summative assessment: assess achievement at the end of instruction.
13. What is evaluation
Evaluation concerned with a whole range of issues in and beyond education,
lesson, programs, and skill can be evaluated. It produce a global view of
achievements usually based on many different types of information such as
observation of lesson, test scores, assessment reports, course documents or
interview with student and teachers.
14. Process evaluation
It refers to evaluation taking place during the program or learning activity, it is
conducted while the event to be evaluated is occurring and focuses on identifying
the progress toward purposes, objectives, or outcomes to improve the activities,
courses, curriculum, program or teaching and student,
It is also known as formative evaluation.
15. Product evaluation
Product evaluation examines the effect of outcomes of some subject.
It conducted at the end of course.
It is also known as summative evaluation. It evaluates the progress towards an
established outcomes.
16. Purpose of evaluation
Clarify and define objectives.
Facilitate the improvement program.
Motivate participant.
Establish and maintain standards to, met legal, professional and academic
credentials.
Test the efficiency of teachers.
17. Conti….
For measure and evaluate the educational achievements of students from time
to time and to provide them feedback.
For find out the hindrances in the educational progress of the students and
remedy them.
18. Purpose of assessment
The primary aim of assessment is to support student learning. The process of
assessment (when done well) will engage students in behaviours activities that
support them to learn what you want them to.
We also use assessment to answer the question:
“ what have our student learned and how well have they learned it?”
19. Basic purpose of assessment
To find out if student have mastered a concept or skills.
To motivate students to engage more in learning.
To make student learn by stressing on application and reasoning skills.
To help students develop a positive attitude about a subject.
To let the parents know the academic progress of their children.
20. Conti…
To convey teacher expectations from the students.
To let the student know what they need to focus on to improve their
academic standing.
To encourage student self evaluation.
22. Preparation of assessment tool.
Guide line: assessment must be aligned with curriculum.
Assessment must be easy to use.
Assessment must have clearly defined process.
They should assess relevant type of knowledge.
They should collect an adequate sample.
24. Conti…
Explanation: select or construct assessment that cover the same content,
behaviors, and condition as those taught in class.
Make sure there are directions and scoring procedures. Make the assessment
easy to follow.
Know the purpose and limitation of the instruction.
25. Conti…
Write adequate items for each attribute of concept.
Use measurement rule that assign points to the smallest relevant units.
Include the most authentic items you can without losing sensivity to learning or
alignment.
26. Principle of assessment
Assessment should be aimed at improving student performance.
Assessment should be based on an understanding of how student learn.
Assessment should be an integral component of course design and not something to
add afterword.
Good assessment provides useful information to report credibility to parents on student
achievement.
27. Conti……
Good assessment requires clarity of purpose, goals, standards and criteria.
Good assessment requires a variety of measures.
Assessment methods used should be valid, reliable and consistent .
Assessment requires attention to outcomes and processes.
Assessment works best when it is ongoing rather than episodic Assessment for
improved performance involves feedback and reflection
28. Advantages of Assessment.
Helps in knowing the position of a student when they enter a course.
It provides data on student learning.
It provides a large view of students’ need and assessment.
In accordance to the students’ achievement, the curriculum and teaching
methods can be adjusted
29. Disadvantages of assessment.
It limits the potential of a student to a mere ‘test’.
Under supervision and pressure and supervision, creativity and performance is
affected.
Though assessment aims at bringing out the latent knowledge, it often conceals
it by the pressure it creates.
The parameter to judging knowledge is just a test score.
