WIMBLEDON
The Championships, Wimbledon, or simply Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world,
considered by many to be the most prestigious . The duration of the tournament is two weeks. It has
been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four
Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the other three being the Australian Open, French Open and
US Open. Wimbledon is the only with grass, the game's original surface. The central or main
track is called Centre Court, and the finals are always played there. The male winner receives a
silver trophy, while the female winner is given a silver platter. The champions in 2011 in the
individual category were Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova.
History
The first time played the tournament was organized by "All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet
Club" in 1877. The women's doubles and mixed doubles were built in 1913. In October 1940,
the complex was bombed by German forces. Also was the scene of some of the greatest tennis
matches of all time, most notably the end of 2008 ( Nadal. Federer) and 2009 ( Federer.
Roddick). In 2009, first used the roof of the main field. Also for this tournament have passed
many of the best players in the world, for example Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Pete Sampras
or Venus Williams.
Traditions
Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code for competitors. It is the only tournament
where that clothing is required for both male and female is absolutely white. The eating of
