2. Album Covers
The Weeknd’s album cover for ‘TRILOGY’ is very traditional for his music genre and it represents the artist
perfectly. In music videos, he doesn’t look at the camera a lot, he usually looks in a different direction but you
are still able to see his face. This album cover shows his face but again, he isn’t looking at the camera. There is
also a lot of women in the videos being shown in a very sexual manner, there is a women in the album cover
but you can’t really see her which is contrasted with the actual music videos. The lighting is very similar to the
music videos as the lighting is very dark and there is just enough light to see some features on the artists face.
This is The Weeknd’s music videos remain the same through out the two different albums. However
the album covers are slightly contrasting, but the main picture of the artist includes the same aspects
which are the dark clothing and facing a different direction, although on this picture he is actually
looking at the camera rather than away from it. He is still based in the middle of the frame however
the background is much more bright and not just black and white. The background is on the streets
but is blurred, there is often shots like this towards the start or end of the video and the shot is
usually a focus pull. Another difference between the two album covers is the difference in size of the
artist and album name. In ‘TRILOGY’, the artists name is much bigger than the album name. On the
other hand, the album on the left ‘KISS LAND’ is much larger the artists name. this could be because
the artist is much more known now as his first album was successful.

As soon as you click onto The Weeknd’s
website, there is an instant pop-up of his
latest single which is ‘often’
When you click ‘close’ on the video, you
see his website. Below the big banner,
there are loads of links which you can click
on such as – music, tour, shop, Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram and more.
As you scroll down the website,
there are many photos, the first
few are of him performing.
As you get further down the page,
he begins to thank fans and show
his clothing range, including
women in minimal clothing with
cleavage showing.
The Weeknd also uses his website to inform
his fans on his upcoming events. When you
click on this it take you where to buy tickets.
As you click on some of these subtitles, it
takes you to a different part of the website
or whole new site together. When you click
music it takes you to iTunes where you can
buy his music.

5. Similar artist
Drake is a rapper which is a different style of music than
The Weeknd, however they have collaborated a fair few
times with the main collaboration being ‘crew love’
which is on drakes album ‘Take Care’. Their music videos
are also very similar including many of the same
characteristics being women, alcohol, drugs and party.
Another artist similar to The Weeknd is
‘PARTYNEXTDOOR’ who are a new upcoming artist who
are recently being discovered. They are signed onto
Drake’s music label ‘OVO sound’ . They are inbetween
Drake and The Weeknd’s style, they rap but they are
also quite slow as well. They have got a video for their
song featuring Drake which is ‘recognise’. This video is
also typical as it includes women alcohol and the artist
showing his wealth.

6. Conclusion
From doing this task, it has allowed me to learn a little bit
more information about the artist and his style. It has
reinforced my knowledge of his favoured shot types which
is mid/close up shots. This is because his music and lyrics
are quite deep and meaningful so these shot types enable
you to see the emotion he is showing.
I have also watched music videos from similar artists in a
similar music genre or even artists he has worked with. By
doing this, it shows me different aspects of TheWeeknd as
he is involved in different songs other than his own so it is
interesting to she what shots are used. It is more than often
the same.
In every song that The Weeknd appears in, there is always a
similar use of drugs, alcohol and women. Artist are usually
drinking or having a party. We usually see them smoking
weed and this is often in the lyrics as well. But sexual
language is included in every song and in videos there is at
least one woman being shown in a sexual mannor.
