This document outlines the MYP Design Technology program at a school. It states that all students in Years 1-5 are required to take a minimum of 50 hours per year of Design Technology. While some students may not take a Design course, they will be exposed to Design Technology through integration in other subjects. In Grade 6, students take Design Technology once a week for 35 hours. In Grades 7-8, students take the course twice a week for over 50 hours total. The courses use the design cycle approach and include integrated projects with other subjects. Example units are provided. The document distinguishes between Design Technology, which uses the design process, and ICT, which teaches skills like research and presentation skills. It also provides

Design Technology Course
Once per week (35 contact hours)
Integrated Projects with other MYP subjects in Grades 6 – 8
Grade 7 & 8:
Design Technology Course
Twice per week (over 50 contact hours)

6. Example UNITS:
Guided – How can I create a fast
solar powered car out of recycled
materials?
Open– How can I organize myself
better?
7. MYP (Design)Technology
Vs. Technology (ICT)
Technology is an MYP subject
Uses the design cycle as a model for thinking
Students are expected to solve problems
Focus on the whole design process rather
than the product
ICT (Information Communication Technology)
Integrated in all classes, including DT
Teaching of skills such as: researching
(accessing information), word processing,
creating presentations, video editing, etc.
