So, how can you reach your target market at the exact best time to make a sale – and do it free!
Back in the 1990s my wife, Marilyn and I owned a mail order catalog company that sold children’s products
as give-aways to doctors, dentists and hospitals throughout the US and Canada.
So you can see that I’m not just making this up, here’s a photo of the front cover of our 32 page catalog
and the inside front cover showing 10 reasons to buy from us and a photo of us.

Even all those years ago, I still didn’t have any more hair than I do
now . . .
We had about 10,000 doctor’s offices and hospitals as customers
and since we relied on direct mail to get and keep customers, the
cost was critical.
This was before the Internet, but the things I learned back then
are just as valid now.
The Internet is a new distribution and marketing channel, but
there are many billions of dollars of products sold using direct
response marketing methods.
See this chart showing 2014 spending by channel. I’ll bet you had
no idea that in 2014 $45 Billion was spent on direct mail – that’s
right, postal mail!
And these products are still shipped to the customers by USPS, UPS or FedEx – and even if the news is
correct, maybe soon by Amazon drone!
Since all our sales were by direct mail, we had a lot of experience with hundreds of direct mail promotions
– every one marked with it’s own special code for tracking.
But, no matter what we did, one code always did better than all the others year after year.
We called it “BB”.
I know that means nothing to you, but BB stood for “bounce-back”.
That’s the term for an offer included in the box with the product shipment. Every order we shipped always
had a BB offer inside.
It worked best because the customer sees it right as they are opening the box containing their order.
That’s the exact moment they are happiest with us and is also the very best time to get them to place
another order.
There was one other huge benefit to us – no postage!
While all our other mailings had postage costs which were huge, the bounceback offer went inside the box
so the postage to deliver it to our customers was $0.
The weight of the offer never affected the shipping cost since we were shipping a 3 or 4 pound box of
stickers, a few more ounces for a flyer didn’t matter.
So, how does this apply to you?
If you are selling digital products or services delivered online, it doesn’t.
But if you ship out a physical product it very much matters. You should never ship out a box to a customer
without some sort of bounce-back offer inside – whether to sell another one of your products or someone
else’s that makes you money.
You can do this online too – just include an offer for something else along with your info product or digital
product.
In fact, this kind or advertising is called “insert media” when you pay to have your BB offer put in someone
else’s product shipment!
Bet you didn’t know you could do that, did you?
You can go to a resource called Standard Rate And Data - the Direct Mail List Source book or Nextmark
and see all the companies offering to put your flyer in with their product.
Insert media also includes the ad inserts you see in credit card bills, cable bills or even those annoying
postcard size ads that fall out of magazines.
It’s big business, businesses spend over $1 Billion doing this each year.
But if you have a physical product you ship, at least do this in your own shipments – it’s free and you will
be reaching your customers at the very best time to make another sale!
