: change the status of inabilities and absences but in different ways

: aimed at creating or elaborating descriptions of real-world phenomena

related to human use of computing.
3 characteristic subtypes
1. unknown phenomena

also called second-order problems: their substance does not pertain to the world directly
: Work on a conceptual research problem is aimed at explaining previously

unconnected phenomena occurring in interaction.
3 characteristic subtypes
1. implausibility (비현실적)
2. inconsistency (불일치)
3. incompatibility (상반되는)

1. implausibility: the phenomenon is unreasonable, improbable, or lacking an explanation.

ex) ‘Direct Manipulation Interfaces’, 1985

: GUI is more direct than CLI

2. inconsistency: a position is inconsistent with data, with itself, or with some other position.

ex) ‘Implications for Design’, 2005 

: Privacy defined in communication vs. “technological state”

3. incompatibility: two positions have assumptions that cannot be reconciled.

ex) ‘Characterizing Computer Input with Fitts’ Law Parameters’, 2005

: two scholars proposed two incompatible metrics on how to analyze data

3. Constructive Problems
: Constructive research is aimed at producing understanding about the construction of
an interactive artifact for some purpose in human use of computing.
3 characteristic subtypes
1. no known solution

: work innovating novel concepts for interaction

2. partial, ineffective, or inefficient solution

: papers presenting improved solutions for some aspect of interaction

3. insufficient knowledge or resources for implementation or deployment

: inability to implement or deploy, which can be caused by lack of knowledge or resources.

• while raising concerns about validity
• offers a generalizable and
• efficient solution
• to an important, recurring problem

5 Aspects of Problem Solving Capacity
1. Significance

: a solution addresses a problem that is important to the stakeholders of the research

2. Effectiveness

: the solution resolves the essential aspects of the stated problem

3. Efficiency

: the costs of applying a solution relative to the gains achieved

4. Transfer

: how well the solution transfers to neighboring problems or other instances of the problem

5. Confidence

: the probability that the proposed solution holds
A research problem in HCI is a stated lack of understanding about some phenomenon in
human use of computing, or stated inability to construct interactive technology to
address that phenomenon for desired ends.
3. Are we doing a good job as a field?
HCI papers have mixed problem types
• Empirical–constructive (e.g., an empirical study with implications for design)
• Empirical–conceptual (e.g., an empirical study to validate a theory)
• Constructive–conceptual (e.g., prototypes employed to explore principles of design)
• Constructive–empirical (e.g., a technique with a study that not only evaluates but contributes to 

understanding of relevant phenomena, factors, and effects)
• Conceptual–empirical (e.g., a theory or model validated or refined on the basis of a decisive test)
• Conceptual–constructive (e.g., novel ways to design for theoretically predicted phenomena in interaction)
High Tolerance for Risk
HCI Paper Characteristics
HCI is willing to accept relatively high uncertainty and risk to achieve large gains.
— Many visionary papers in HCI have entailed great leaps of faith
3. Are we doing a good job as a field? - CHI Best Papers
1. Best Papers focus mostly on empirical and constructive types. 

The conceptual type is under-represented.
2. All five criteria for problem-solving capacity are mentioned as motivations for
contributions. However, we could not identify any consensus on the criteria, and each paper
followed its own strategy.
3. There is a split between addressing practical and theory-oriented research problems. 

This contributes to incommensurability of HCI research.

Borst and colleages presented a model of interruptions with the explicit aim of reconciling
earlier findings through an integrated theory.

What Makes Interruptions Disruptive?: A Process-Model Account of the Effects of the
Problem State Bottleneck on Task Interruption and Resumption.
• the anomaly that earlier results on interruptions need to be reconciled and that ‘to improve
our understanding of interruptions, these studies should be integrated into a cognitive
theory’ (p. 2971) and
• existing theories explain only some findings 

(e.g., ‘other interruption effects cannot be easily explained within memory-for-goals theory’)

4. Empirical research should be done in such a way that its hypotheses inform
design, and designs should embody and be driven by empirically
validated hypotheses.

The impression from the Best Paper sample was that many papers could
do a better job in describing the problem they are tackling.

Conclusion
The systematic weakness of HCI is our inability to produce conceptual
contributions that link empirical and constructive research…
Problem-solving may provide the solution, as:
1. the five criteria for problem-solving capacity can be used ‘prescriptively’ to
generate ideas for how to improve an individual research effort
2. problem-solving capacity can be applied to whole sub-topics to assess them
and see opportunities to improve.
3. it can steer the researcher to avoid pathological practices by…
a) by asking researchers to explicate their research problems, as opposed
to just presenting results;
b) by providing criteria for outcomes that entail going beyond ‘point
designs’, ‘novelty’, and ‘existence proofs’;
c) by driving researchers to present more solid evidence and thereby
increase confidence.

Conclusion The systematic weakness of HCI is our inability to produce conceptual contributions that link empirical and constructive research… Problem-solving may provide the solution, as: 1. the five criteria for problem-solving capacity can be used ‘prescriptively’ to generate ideas for how to improve an individual research effort 2. problem-solving capacity can be applied to whole sub-topics to assess them and see opportunities to improve. 3. it can steer the researcher to avoid pathological practices by… a) by asking researchers to explicate their research problems, as opposed to just presenting results; b) by providing criteria for outcomes that entail going beyond ‘point designs’, ‘novelty’, and ‘existence proofs’; c) by driving researchers to present more solid evidence and thereby increase confidence.
