 Present participles is usually formed by adding
“ing”.
interest – interesting
 Past participles as adjectives is usually formed by
adding “ed” “en” to the word.
 Interest- interested
Present and past
participles

 Present Participle (-ing) is used to describe
something or someone.
"I watched an interesting TV about American history last
night."
"This film is boring.
 Past Participle (-ed) is used to describe how people
feel about something or someone.
"I'm interested in American history."
"I'm bored of my job.

 1. It can be used before the noun it
modifies. an encouraging word, a shocking secret,
a worried mother
 2. It can be used in the comparative form. They
were more frightened than we were. Ted's final grades
were most pleasing.
 The new song is interesting
 People are interested in the new song
 Most of the news on TV is depressing
 Daniel is really depressed about the news on
TV
 The Horror movie was frightining.
 We are frightened because of the horror
movie.
Examples

 The weather was freezing last Saturday.
 I got frozen by the weather last Saturday.
 The park is a frightining place at night
 Nancy feels frightened as she walks alone in the
park.

 Laura told me a shocking secret.
 I’m still shocked about the secret.
 The chemistry class is confusing
 I’m confused about the chemistry class.
 It was a tiring Tuesday!
 I’m really tired!

 I’m alarmed about the hurricane
The situation about the hurricane is alarming.

 The rock concert was ________ (amazing/amazed)
last night.
 I feel_____ (dissapointing/ dissapointed) about my
English grades.
The new TV channel is really________ ( entertained /
entertaining)

Present and Past Participles as Adjectives

  • 2.   Present participles is usually formed by adding “ing”. interest – interesting  Past participles as adjectives is usually formed by adding “ed” “en” to the word.  Interest- interested Present and past participles
  • 3.   Present Participle (-ing) is used to describe something or someone. "I watched an interesting TV about American history last night." "This film is boring.  Past Participle (-ed) is used to describe how people feel about something or someone. "I'm interested in American history." "I'm bored of my job.
  • 4.   1. It can be used before the noun it modifies. an encouraging word, a shocking secret, a worried mother  2. It can be used in the comparative form. They were more frightened than we were. Ted's final grades were most pleasing.
  • 5.  The new song is interesting  People are interested in the new song  Most of the news on TV is depressing  Daniel is really depressed about the news on TV  The Horror movie was frightining.  We are frightened because of the horror movie. Examples
